Allies

Characters who help the protagonists in any way that they can. They are currently divided into two different factions, one group supporting Hakuno and the other helping Playmaker.

Playmaker's Faction

    Shoichi Kusanagi

Shoichi Kusanagi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shoichikusanagi_7.png
The Hacker who Seeks Retribution
The owner of the hot dog stand Cafe Nagi, and Yusaku's ally as they begin their journey to hunt down the Knights of Hanoi.
  • Acceptable Breaks from Canon: His meeting with Yusaku was written before the truth of their relationship was expanded on, though the fic was an Alternate Universe to begin with.
  • Adapted Out: Possibly subverted. While Shoichi's avatar "No Name" isn't mentioned, he's still a hacker and was known as Kolter way back when.
  • Big Brother Instinct: He's seriously pissed at the Knights of Hanoi for causing the incident that left his younger brother a miserable wreck.
  • The Confidant: To Yusaku, as he was in the series.
  • The Cracker: In the past, he was a skilled hacker known as "Kolter," and he's been digging up all sorts of information from all across the web. Nico Smiley seems to know him rather well, given that he gave Yusaku a cache of data that led him to Shoichi in the first place.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Implied. When Yusaku identifies him as Kolter, he looks weary, implying that his tenure as a hacker was not pleasant.
  • Hacker Cave: Come on, be honest. Who expects a hot dog stand to be the base of operations for an ex-hacker and who is soon to be one of the most well-known duelists in LINK VRAINS?
  • The Bus Came Back: In Laplace, he and Yusaku return to the forefront as they once again battle the Knights of Hanoi.
  • Put on a Bus: He and Yusaku barely had any relevance to Fate/VRAINS to the point where their last appearance was when the VRAINS International Tournament began.

Hakuno's Faction

    Rin Tohsaka

Rin Tohsaka

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rinextra.jpg
The Heir to the Jeweled Bloodline
An Alternate Self to the Rin Tohsaka from Fate/EXTRA.

Born into the era in which magecraft had entered into a state of decline, and had gone from an art to digital hacking, Rin wanted nothing more than to achieve her family's wish of reaching the Root. However, those plans had changed when the Harwey family had expressed an interest in utilizing the power of the Moon Cell for their own gain and ideals. This led to her joining a resistance movement and transferred herself to the Moon Cell, where she, like her ancestor, would participate in the Holy Grail War.

By pure chance, she met and befriended the cyber ghost that was Hakuno Kishinami. Though adversaries, she had imparted all that she could to help him. When it came time for him to decide who he would do battle with, he had sided with her. Together, they achieved victory and obtained the Moon Cell.

However, not all things had gone according to plan. The appearance of a great threat, one capable of traversing dimensions, has consumed her world and attempts to do the same, all for the sake of obtaining the Moon Cell. Now, Rin leads her own resistance against this threat, aided by other Masters who were saved by a "Hakuno Kishinami."

She is the Master of the Lancer-class Servant, Cu Chulainn.
  • Action Girl: Well, duh. Have you met Rin? She is not a Spirit Hacker or Master for nothing. While she was pushed to the sidelines and became Mission Control for a good portion of the CCC Arc, she finally gets her time to shine in Laplace by showing off her dueling chops in a two-on-one match with Aoi against a Knight of Hanoi.
  • Back-to-Back Badasses: In her world, she and a male Hakuno Kishinami had won the Moon Cell Holy Grail War, making them the victors and likely inheritors of the Regalia. Unfortunately for them, Kiara came into the picture...
  • Big Damn Heroes: She shows up to save Aoi when a Knight of Hanoi is about to call on a Cracking Dragon to eliminate her by hacking the knight's duel disk, forcing her to duel the two if she wants to beat Aoi the "easy way."
  • Dishing Out Dirt: She uses the Gem-Knight archetype, which mostly comprises of EARTH attribute monsters. That said, she seems to favor her FIRE attribute monsters Gem-Knight Ruby Apprentice and Gem-Knight Ruby Lord.
  • Dumb Blonde: Defied! She is extraordinarily gifted, being a descendant from the original red devil and the leader of her own resistance movement. Hakuno also regards her as one of the best Spirit Hackers in the world.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: She has blonde hair, and she's willing to traverse to different worlds to fight back against Kiara.
  • Heroic Lineage: Her ancestor is the original Rin Tohsaka from Fate/stay night.
  • Info Dump: She informs Hakuno about the existence of Kiara, who has been traversing different dimensions in the hopes of consuming their Moon Cells, and that she leads her own resistance movement in the hopes of defeating her.
  • The Leader: She is the leader behind the makeshift resistance movement, consisting of Alternate Self's from different worlds, each of whom had a bond with their respective Hakunos.
  • Red Is Heroic: She wears a sleeveless red shirt, a variation of her typical attire.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Whenever Kiara damages a world beyond repair, Rin opts to utilize a Kaleid Slide, the Moon Cell's version of Second Magic and transfer her group to a different world, or a Quantum Slide and enter a different timeline. She advocates for this when Zepar has merged reality and LINK VRAINS to the point where it can no longer be salvaged and take the survivors with them. Hakuno isn't having any of it, however.
  • Tsundere: Wouldn't be Rin if she wasn't. Just don't ever think or call her that where she can hear you.

    Shinji Matou

Shinji Matou

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_inline_odnzhivdwo1rpjv75_400.jpg
The Child Gaming Champion
An Alternate Self to the Shinji Matou from Fate/EXTRA and Fate/stay night.

A designer child of the Makiri Family, Shinji was both a gifted Spirit Hacker and a gaming champion. At eight years old, he had caught wind of a grand competition called the "Holy Grail War." The prize? To have your ultimate wish granted. His competitive spirit was sparked that day and sought to obtain this so-called "Holy Grail."

That day, he received more than he bargained for. He had been forced to participate in a repeating war, where 108 individuals would kill each other until one was left. Somehow, through all of this, he had found a comrade in Hakuno Kishinami. They were adversaries, but at the same time, they were friends. Not too long ago, Hakuno Kishinami saved his life.

And Shinji Matou will always repay his debts.

He is the Master of the Rider-class Servant, Francis Drake.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: He's still an egotistical jerk, but he is leagues better than his counterpart from the mainline visual novel. He might as well be considered to be a different person altogether, especially since he treats Hakuno with respect.
  • Berserk Button: Hurt Rider in any way, and you will find yourself understanding that pissing off a Master is a very bad idea. This seems to a common button among all Masters.
  • Call-Back: In Extra, Shinji was Hakuno's opponent in the first week of the Holy Grail War. In the first round of the VRAINS International Tournament preliminaries, Shinji is Hakuno's opponent in the first round. Hakuno lampshades how nostalgic it feels.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: In-Universe, he is this. He apparently spends several hours, if not almost the entire day, in LINK VRAINS to the point where he has the highest log-in time of any player in the virtual world. And much of this time is devoted to playing Duel Monsters, hence why he outmatches Hakuno in their Duel.
  • Friendly Enemy: In the first preliminary round of the VRAINS International Tournament, where he faces off against Hakuno.
  • I Owe You My Life: In his world, Hakuno Kishinami saved his life from Kiara Sessyoin and he seeks to repay the favor.
  • Oh, Crap!: Has this reaction when he learns that BB is also in the world of Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS, knowing full well what she can do.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: With Francis Drake, who he sees as a genuine friend and partner. He even considers himself to be part of her crew.
  • Pirate: This is part of his deck's motif, matching with Francis Drake's own history of being a swashbuckler.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: Downplayed. He seems mature for the most part, but he's still just an eight-year-old kid.
  • Younger Than They Look: His LINK VRAINS avatar is modeled after his appearance in the Moon Cell, when he's really just a child.

    Leonardo B. Harwey

Leo Harwey

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/leo_and_gawien_illustration.jpg
The Prince who Wields the Sun

An Alternate Self of the Leonardo Harwey who appeared in Fate/EXTRA.

The heir to the prestigious Harwey household, and younger brother to Julius. Groomed by the Harwey family, he was meant to lead the world into a brighter future. The conglomerate would follow his lead as he would create a new world order, through the power of the Moon Cell.

However, as the Holy Grail War began, he encountered a mysterious person who had no history. No true desire, other than to survive in this battle. By all rights, this person should have lost and been eliminated. And yet, by some intense desire and the iron-clad will to fight, they pushed forward. As the weeks went on, Leo could only express admiration and interest in this otherwise unordinary combatant.

Ironically, despite being groomed to be the leader of the world, Leo lacked something vital. And only through defeat at the hands of this person did Leo finally obtain what he was missing. With his goal achieved, all that's left is repay this favor.

He is the Master of the Saber-class Servant, Gawain.

  • The Ace: He was described as being one of the strongest Masters in the Moon Cell Holy Grail War. As a testament to this feat, he was fought by Hakuno before her fated encounter with Twice H. Pierceman.
  • Cain and Abel: The Abel to Julius' Cain. Whereas Julius is working with Kiara to get his revenge on Hakuno, even though she's not the same Hakuno from his world, Leo works with Rin to protect Hakuno and to defeat Kiara.
  • Character Development: It's implied he's from a world similar to the events of Fate/EXTRA CCC, so he's already undergone this development.
  • Covert Pervert: When Nero flirts with Hakuno as they prepare to face Kiara Sessyoin, he becomes interested in seeing whether or not they'll be privileged with another Kiara Incident.
  • Cultured Badass: Leo was raised to be the heir of the Harwey family, and the overall head of the plutocracy, thus no expense was spared in his training. He's regarded as one of the strongest Masters in the Grail War. He also appears to be well-versed in certain mythologies, as he explains the theme of his Magibullet deck — which are based off the German Opera "Der Freischütz."
  • Dark Is Not Evil: The Magibullet deck uses Fiend-Type monsters, though they're all LIGHT attribute.
  • Foil: To Julius. His brother is working with Kiara Sessyoin under the pretense of getting revenge against Hakuno Kishinami, as they killed him in his world (despite the fact that the Hakuno we follow in the story is not the same one that killed him and is from a different world), while Leo is working with Rin to protect Hakuno, who in his world saved him, and is fighting against Kiara. Julius is a Dead Face that hates the world and the living, while Leo is a cyber ghost who has good relationships with his friends.
    • This even extends to their respective decks. Julius employs a fanfic-original deck called Ultramarine and Cracked Cell, the former of which is a Death by a Thousand Cuts type, specializing in dealing damage to his opponents and even himself, whereas Leo uses an already established deck called "Magibullet", which locks down his opponent's moves.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: He has blonde hair, and he works with Rin in their efforts to defeat Kiara and save Hakuno.
  • Light 'em Up: Employs the Magibullet deck, which composes almost entirely of LIGHT Monsters. Naturally, his ace is the wielder of the Holy Sword of the Sun.
  • More Dakka: Leo's Deck "Magibullet" features monsters who are almost always depicted using guns. Special mentions go to Magibullet Musketeer Wild, who has an assortment of rifles attached to his arms and rockets over his shoulders.
  • Red Is Heroic: Wears a bright red uniform, and he's part of Rin's resistance movement against Kiara.
  • Virtual Ghost: He's revealed to be a cyber ghost, having died at Hakuno's hands in his world. He doesn't hold it against them, though.
  • You Killed My Father: Leo makes it clear that he knows full well that Julius was the one who killed his mother, but he doesn't show any active hatred towards his older brother.

    Rani VIII

Rani VIII

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rani_0.png
The Homunculus of Egypt
One of Hakuno's major allies from Fate/EXTRA.

A Homunculus from the Atlas Institute, Rani was created by Sialim Eltnam Re-Atlasia, to see whether or not it was possible for humans and alchemists to continue existing in the cyber world, even if it meant giving up their physical bodies.

At some point in time, Rani became affiliated with Hakuno Kishinami during the Moon Cell Holy Grail War, due to her interest in her peculiar existence. In Hakuno's world, she chose to protect Rani and fought against Rin, and as a result, Rani became even more infatuated with her.

The origins of this Rani VIII are unknown compared to the other Masters, but she serves as Mission Control with Rin.

She is the master of the Berserker-class Servant, Lu Bu.
  • Alchemy Is Magic: She is an alchemist of the Atlas Institution, and practices astrology as well as spirit hacking.
  • Ambiguous Situation: It's unclear what world Rani hails from, as she never mentions the events of her world and only mentions that she has met many different Hakuno Kishinamis. In "FATED BATTLE," it's implied that Rani is in fact the one from Hakuno's world.
  • Artificial Human: She is a homunculus, but she was created with human DNA.
  • Astrologer: One of her practiced forms of magecraft.
  • Curtains Match the Window: She has the same-colored purple hair and eyes.
  • Deadpan Snarker: To an extent, but nowhere near as proficient in the art as Archer.
  • Emotionless Girl: Zigzagged. Being a homunculus, she can't really express very many emotions, but she can express what feelings she does know.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: Her stockings are different colors, and she ties part of her hair in a right-sidetail.
  • Mission Control: Rani takes over for Rin during the Zepar crisis and helps Hakuno out by trying to keep someone, actually Revolver, from hacking into her Duel Disk, believing that they are trying to sabotage her.
  • Navel-Deep Neckline: While she isn't developed in that particular area, Rani's shirt exposed a great deal of her chest and nearly reaches her naval.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Barely averted. In her defense, she didn't know that the hacker trying to hack into Hakuno's Duel Disk was actually Revolver, who is trying to change the duel into a two-on-one match between him and Hakuno against Kiara. If she had continued to block his attempts and didn't get distracted momentarily, chances are Hakuno would have lost her duel and Kiara would have gotten her hands on the Regalia.

    Go Onizuka

Go Onizuka

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dcd032468c495648305d1a9d167209d31496343551_full.jpg
The Wrestler of Charisma
One of the top ranked duelists in LINK VRAINS, Go Onizuka was a former street orphan that wished to bring happiness and smiles to those like him.

Presently, he is the Third Ranked Duelist in Japan. In Laplace, he becomes the Master of Darius III.
  • Attention Whore: In Laplace TURN-04, both Nero and Gilgamesh state Go's distracted behavior is due to Playmaker receiving more attention than him. It eventually reaches the point where he duels Playmaker in the following chapter, unable to stand the latter's increase in popularity.
  • Berserk Button: Never hurt any child in front of him, or you will understand what it means to face an ogre. Carmilla learned the hard way when Onizuka was able to see Shinji's true appearance, possibly due to the real world and LINK VRAINS emerging.
  • Brought to You by the Letter "S": He has a "G" branded on his belt.
  • Childhood Friends: Despite their differing personalities, Go has been friends with Makoto since they were kids.
  • Cool Big Bro: He's this to the kids at the orphanage. They're also the big reason why he became a Charisma Duelist in the first place.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: His Fusion Monster, On-Gouki The Assassin Ogre, is a DARK Attribute Monster compared to the rest of his EARTH Attribute Gouki monsters, and is listed as being a Fiend-type.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: His Gouki deck primarily consists of EARTH monsters.
  • Fake Muscles: Despite having a Heroic Build, he wears a gold six-pack as part of his outfit.
  • Friend to All Children: Became a Charisma Duelist to give kids like himself in the past a better life.
  • Heroic Second Wind: Was on the ropes along with Shinji in their duel against Carmilla. But when he saw that outside of VRAINS, Shinji was just a child, and that he was in agony, Go began to rampage.
  • Meaningful Name: "On-Gouki The Assassin Ogre"'s name likely comes from the Japanese oni known as Ongyo-Ki, believed to be the originator behind ninjutsu.
  • Noodle Incident: Onizuka apparently owes Aoi a favor, which she cashes in by having him teach Hakuno how to duel and help her get actual field experience, being unable to do so herself.
  • Online Alias: Averted. His Avatar name is the same as his actual name.
  • The Rival: To Blue Angel, who is also a ranked Duelist. The two are on amicable terms despite this, and Onizuka even accepts the task of teaching Hakuno how to duel for the first time when Aoi cashes in on a favor. This drive is also what lets him become Darius III's Master, who strives to battle his own rival.
  • World's Strongest Man: He's seen as one of the best Charisma Duelists in Japan, which is supported by his status as the Third Ranked Duelist in LINK VRAINS. He even briefly made Second Ranked while Aoi and Hakuno were unable to log in.
  • Wrestler in All of Us: His Gouki deck is structured and fight like actual wrestlers, befitting his motif. In Hakuno's first ever duel, he even makes a big show out of it and often makes wrestling references throughout.
