Republic of El Salvador
Common Names: El Salvador, Salvador, the Second Republic
Official Name: Republic of El Salvador
Starting Leader: José Napoleón Duarte
Ruling Party: Christian Democratic Party (PDC)
Ideology: Christian Democracynote
Starting Faction: None
- Crapsaccharine World: El Salvador might seem as a prosperous, democratic nation to an outside viewer. In reality, it suffers from large instability, repressive rule by the PDC and political extremism on both sides.
José Napoleón Duarte
Full Name: José Napoleón Duarte Fuentes
Party: Christian Democratic Party (PDC)
Ideology: Christian Democracynote
- Defector from Decadence: Duarte first achieved prominence by taking part in organising protests against the far-right dictatorship in 1944, considering the regime to be irreformable. He was shot during the protests and forced to seek exile in the US, but gained reputation as a principled man.
- Internal Reformist: Ever since Aguirre y Salinas took power in 1952, Duarte worked with the government to implement democratic reforms. His presidency is marked by increasing liberalisation and the 1982 election will be the first genuinely competitive election in the history of the Second Republic.
- A Lighter Shade of Gray: Duarte leads a repressive regime that only recently started embracing ideal of genuine democracy, which is still miles better than the neo-fascist ARENA and the represive communist FMLN.
- Subverted (in the positive sense) in case Duarte wins reelection in 1982, at which point his reforms are considered a success by the PDC and he sidelines the internal opposition, leading to the PDC completely embracing Duarte's reforms and the idea of turning El Salvador into a completely democratic nation.
- Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: His democratisation programme can result in a loss for the ruling Christian Democrats, who have held onto power via authoritarian means since their creation in 1957. This leads to the victory of either the far-left FMLN or the far-right ARENA, bringing El Salvador to a civil war.
- Taking Up the Mantle: Duarte generally continues the "centrist prosperity" line of his predecessors, Aguirre y Salinas and Magaña, combined with more genuine democratic reforms and slow liberalisation of the system.
- Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: In spite of his general popularity, there is a large opposition to Duarte within the PDC itself. It is necessary for Duarte to win the 1982 election to cement his power and show his opponents PDC can remain in power even in a democratic system.
- Universally Beloved Leader: Downplayed, as there is a significant opposition to the PDC rule, but Duarte personally is beloved by a vast majority of the population, as his rule saw democratisation of the entire Salvadoran political system and achieving peace with the leftist guerrillas.
Cayetano Carpio
Full Name: Salvador Cayetano Carpio
Party: Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN)
Ideology: Marxism-Leninismnote
- Dirty Communists: Carpio is a dedicated communist who believes in equality for all. He's also a dangerous extremist who committed countless acts of terrorism and wasn't executed only thanks to being forced to sign a peace deal with the government.
- Hero-Worshipper: Carpio idolises Che Guevara and Fidel Castro, to the point he dons Castro-styled cap and uniform.
- Principles Zealot: Carpio might mean well, but he doesn't have the word "compromise" in his dictionary, alienating many of his moderate supporters.
- Red Baron: Carpio is known under his nom de guerre "Comandante Marcial"
- We ARE Struggling Together: The FMLN is an alliance of a variety of leftist parties, and as a result, it suffers from constant infighting. It's not helped by the fact that Carpio is not the most unifying leader, representing the most revolutionary tendency as the leader of the Communist Party of El Salvador.
- Well-Intentioned Extremist: Carpio wants to uplift Salvadoran marginalised and impoverished masses, but his methods are very brutal and often cause more suffering than good.
Roberto D'Aubuisson
Full Name: Roberto D'Aubuisson Arrieta
Party: Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA)
Ideology: Neo-Fascismnote
- Dark Horse Victory: ARENA is the smallest of the 3 parliamentary parties and as such, it is the least likely party to win in the 1982 election.
- Evil Reactionary: D'Aubuisson despises Duarte and his reforms, instead supporting a return to a military junta and supports fascist and neo-Nazi ideas as he did in real life. Additionally, one of ARENA-aligned death squads is named in honour of Maximiliano Hernández Martínez, a former dictator known to be extremely brutal and fascistic even by Salvadoran standards.
- Foreign Culture Fetish: D'Aubuisson loves German and American cultures - German due to Germany's Nazi past, American due to his training in the US.
- Internal Death Squad: Before becoming a politician, D'Aubuisson was first a member of and currently also leads of his own death squad Unión Guerrera Blanca (White Warrior's Union). Prior to this, he worked in the infamous ANESAL, Salvadoran Secret Police known for its brutality and repression (de facto functioning as another death squad), until Duarte dissolved it.
- Politically Incorrect Villain: Comes with being a Nazi. D'Aubuisson is anti-Semitic, anti-indigenous and anti-anything that is not a white Salvadoran man.
- Weirldy enough, due to pecularities of Salvadoran politics, the far-right D'Aubuisson and ARENA are also strongly anti-religious and anti-Christian, much more so than the leftist FMLN.

Camilo Cienfuegos
Full Name: Camilo Cienfuegos Gorriarán
Party: Partido Comunista de Cuba - Espectro de Guevaranote (CPC-GS)
Ideology: Neo-Guevarism Permanent War Theorynote
- Sanity Slippage: In real life, Cienfuegos was known for being fairly apolitical (to the point that his actual political ideology is still debated to this day), carefree, and cheerful, with a fatherly leadership style and a heroic reputation as The Heart of the Cuban Revolution before his disappearance. This version has become an Annihilationist.
- Spared By Adaptation: In real life, Cienfuegos died in 1959 when his plane disappeared over the Straits of Florida. Here, he's alive into the 1980's.
