Caerleon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/caerleon.png

Located in Forsena's southwestern area. It is ruled by the Silent Wise King, King Cai and his sister Princess Merriot. Although it is ruled by a very intelligent king, it suffers from poverty. This country has an abundance of seafood and fruit. The land here is very fertile; it is filled with grasslands and forests. Their flag is colored green.

Tropes associated with Caerleon in general:

  • Planet of Hats: The Kingdom you want if you want to play as a Mage Kingdom, with a Mage Ruler, and many many mage Knights (including Janfadar, Cierra, Millia, Lecarra).

    Cai

Cai (Voiced by Kentarō Itō)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cai_character.jpg
Class: Warlock

Ruler of Caerleon, known as the 'Silent Wise King'. He may act a bit dorky, but he's a wise king otherwise. Rules alongside his sister Merriot... although it turns out he's not of royal blood but adopted.

  • The Archmage: A unique class, 'Warlock', with a unique spell list. Appropriately, has one of the highest INT and MP in the game.
  • Badass Bookworm: He bonks his enemies with a book in melee, but that is not what you are supposed to be most afraid of. As squishy as he is, he can still burn off a good chunk of your units as you make your way to him.
  • Brains and Brawn: With Dinadan providing the Brawn. In both gameplay and in story, they complement each others' strengths and weakness quite well.
  • Expy: Of Yang Wenli Both are laidback and compassionate men well-renowned for their genius. He's even literally a "Magician", Yang's nickname in his series.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: His reaction to Gish's Faceā€“Heel Turn and his petty reasons for joining with Zemeckis.
Gish: Cai, the Quiet King of Caerleon. I am lucky to fight you.
Cai: Sir Gish... must we really fight?
Gish: Of course. When I defeat the Wise King, I will go down in history.
Cai: It is useless vanity to want history to remember your name.
Gish: I live to carve my name in history! I bring chaos! In conflict heroes rise! There is no fame in peace.
Cai: Chaos robs the world of peace. If you would steal joy for your vanity, I must stop you!
  • Heavy Sleeper: Had trouble in waking up early, and Merriot usually became his clock for it. Dinadan calls Merriot and him "Beauty and the Sloth."
  • Modest Royalty: His outfit is quite modest when compared to the other five faction leaders, due to the fact that Caerleon is a poor nation and it would be disrespectful of him to wear flashy outfits or jewelry.
  • Not Blood Siblings: With Merriot, as it turns out he's adopted, with their parents even planning for them to wed one day.
  • Red Baron: "Silent Wise King"
  • Red Mage: He has both offensive and healing/support spells in his arsenal. While the latter wasn't as advanced as a Priest's, his offensive spells are some of the best in the game, and he has high enough MP to cast it often and the INT to make it hurt.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: With Merriot. Cai is a wise and laid-back guy.
  • Squishy Wizard: He can cause a world of hurt with his arsenal of Geno spells, but Artificial Stupidity often lets you exploit this. Cai is pretty much doomed if you can get a few hits in.
  • Throw the Book at Them: Or rather, bonk them with it. This is how he's even physically weaker than the local White Mage. Of course, that's not what you need to watch out from him...

    Merriot

Merriot (Voiced by Kanako Mitsuhashi)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/merriot_2.jpg
Class: Scout

Cai's tomboyish sister. She's bubbly, cheerful and sweet, taking care of most of the housework. It turns out that she's the only one who has royal blood, and her late parents' last will is for her and Cai to get married.

  • Game-Breaking Injury: A while after Esgares is defeated, a cutscene will occur where Bulnoil suddenly appears and tries to kill Cai, but Merriot takes the hit. In a rare subversion of Gameplay and Story Segregation, she's actually injured and can't be used in fights or sent out on quests until Caerleon takes over another country.
  • Genki Girl: Merriot is the reason why life around Cai and Caerleon is very lively. Even when her country is conquered, she isn't sad for long. Which is why when she got injured by Bulnoil, things got really sour in Caerleon.
  • Magikarp Power: Quite weak as a scout but given enough exp and her upgraded archer classes give her more attack range and spells, not to mention her high rune growth bolstering her already high rune power.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: With Cai. Merriot is a Genki Girl who makes Caerleon really lively with her presence, and also Cai's alarm in the morning.
  • Tomboy Princess: She's lively, does her own chores, and is willing to act as a scout.
  • Walking the Earth: She goes on one with Millia in Caerleon's ending.

    Dinadan

Dinadan (Voiced by Hiroshi Yanaka)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4715265615_3b8e77c6aa.jpg
Class: Paladin (LoF) / Knight Master (Grand Edition)

The best Knight in Forsena known as 'Knight Master'. He's a real good friend with Cai and refused to serve anyone else except Cai. Of course that means nearly everyone wants a piece of him in battle.

  • The Ace: He's the Knight Master that everyone wants a piece of to prove their worth, and he DOES live up to his title. Gameplay-wise, he's basically an overleveled Rune Knight available from the start and can still carry the game to the end due to great stats with no weak points (Cai was at least offset with being a Squishy Wizard) AND great Rune Power.
  • Badass Boast
Dinadan: The weight of a sword is the weight of life. Can you bear it?
Dinadan: I'll show you the right way to use a sword.
    • In response to King Dryst of Iscalio claiming that being strong makes you a worthy knight.
Dinadan: Then I guess I'm more worthy than you.
  • Brains and Brawn: With Cai and they work very well together both in-game and in-story.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Noted to have 'a malicious tongue.'
  • Master Swordsman: The 'Knight Master' title, though he's also a Knight in Shining Armor. In Grand Edition, he's also given the the Parry skill (25% chance to reduce melee attack damage by 2/3) and Cutting Away (50% chance to nullify arrow attacks).
  • Magic Knight: He has a good set of healing and offensive spells (Holy Word in Legend of Forsena, Bolt in Grand Edition) and enough MP to cast it multiple times.
  • Walking the Earth: Should Caerleon fall, he will go on one and invite Cai to join him.

    Beau Arte

BeauArte (Voiced by Junichi Sugawara)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4715265735_c3d8b80591_o.jpg
Class: Bishop

Advisor of the late King of Caerleon, and still advises Cai as best as he can. He's actually keeping the secret about Cai's birthright and the previous King's last will about Cai and Merriot.

    Millia

Millia (Voiced by Yuriko Fuchizaki)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4961376313_46d2f27352_o.jpg
Class: Enchantress

Millia is a traveling painter who came to serve under Caerleon. She is good friends with Eloute, Gush, Lecarra and Merriot. While initially she did not want to become a rune knight (due to not wanting to quit being a painter), she joins Caerleon out of friendship to Merriot.

  • Magnetic Heroine: Once she arrives at Caerleon, she is able to recruit Eloute, Gush and Leccara for Caerleon through questing by the simple virtue of being good friends with them.

    Eloute

Eloute (Voiced by Tōru Ōkawa)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4715909748_17634e686d_o.jpg
Class: Fighter

A knight who grows up in the harsh environment of Norgard. He is a friend of Millia, who notices his strength.

    Gush

Gush (Voiced by Takashi Matsuyama)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4715910502_246264921d_o.jpg
Class: Monk

Gush is an martial artist who has mastered many different techniques. He is a mentor and a rival to Shast.

    Lecarra

Lecarra (Voiced by Atsuko Tanaka)

Class: Mystic

    Janfadar

Janfadar (Voiced by Shinpachi Tsuji)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4715908874_6fda52fedf_o.jpg
Class: Druid

  • Defeat Means Friendship: Beating Caerleon means that he'll join you to further his research on magic. Unless you're Esgares in Grand Edition.

    Cierra

Cierra (Voiced by Wu Lin Takumi)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4715267081_b064f0def5_o.jpg
Class: Sorceress

A Caerleon mage who somehow has a crush on Cai. Is very sensitive about her age.

  • Crutch Character: Is a powerful second-tier caster and only a few levels away from reaching her final class but she has a low rune power of 150 and her rune growth is also low.
  • Hopeless Suitor: Pines so hard on Cai and had some sort of rivalry with Merriot for that, but probably can never win him.
  • The Lost Lenore: Not her, but if Caerleon is defeated, she joins another country with Cai as a variation of this trope for her, where her bio changes that she often goes up to the balcony and looking at the stars alone. (Even if Cai is not dead, just merely out of war business)
  • Ma'am Shock: Victoria calls her a hag and she gets pissed. Merriot fares better about her age since she's just teasing and Cierra still sees her as a friend.

    Shast

Shast (Voiced by Nobuyuki Hiyama)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4715267201_2e2ac947cd_o.jpg
Class: Grappler

    Bilcock

Bilcock (Voiced by Akira Ishida)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4715910904_05a3a93214_o.jpg
Class: Priest

  • Bungling Inventor: His inventions are either impractical to use (he invented a car but it only moves as fast as a human and it slows down or stops if any weight is placed in it), or it goes wrong (he invented a mechanical robot but has gone out of control and he had to destroy it).
  • Defeat Means Friendship: Beat Caerleon to have him join you, since he thought he should still keep fighting to protect peace. Unless you're Esgares in Grand Edition.
