    The Exiles

The Group as a whole

  • Army of Thieves and Whores: The group were intended to be this as a disposable blunt force to thin out the Mongolian troops.
  • Do Not Go Gentle: Several of them manage to keep fighting even after being fatally injured, to the point that Uriyan becomes demoralised at there being more such "monsters" on the mainland.
  • Dwindling Party: Due to being the primary fighting force against the invaders the group gradually shrinks as time goes by.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Despite most of them being strangers upon arrival to Tsushima, as they are forced to fight together a bond of respect forms between them.
  • A Lighter Shade of Grey: They come across as this as barring a few exceptions they still have some honor and principles compared to the invaders.
  • Morton's Fork: The Exiles are presented with two options after arriving in Tsushima: Either be tried for their crimes (certain death) or stand and fight against the Mongolian forces (almost certain death).
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: With the soldiers of Tsushima at first, though eventually they start to respect each other.

Kuchii Jinzaburō

Voiced by: Yūki Ono

The main character and former retainer of the Kamakura Shogunate.

  • Animal Motifs: Kuchii is compared to a wolf several times.
  • Back-to-Back Badasses: Does this with both Yajirō and Onitakemaru at different points.
  • Brutal Honesty: Kuchii never minces words and even gets kicked out of a military meeting because he insulted the leader of Tsushima's clans.
  • Dual Wielding: During his second clash against Fuheng, Kuchii picks up the broken naginata of the fallen Onitakemaru to use alongside his sword.
  • Hidden Depths: Kuchii has quite the skill with making dioramas and puts it to good use in assessing the geography of Tsushima and later Kanatanoki Castle.
  • Master Swordsman: Kuchii is a master of the Gekei sword style said to have been used by legendary samurai Yoshitsune.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Goes on one after the death of Onitakemaru. He becomes so fierce that many Mongol soldiers become terrified and refuse to attack, simply letting him pass.
  • Sole Survivor: Of the Exiles, Kuchii is the only one confirmed to survive the invasion of Tsushima.
  • The Watson: As someone completely unfamiliar with Tsushima, Kuchii often asks the questions that the audience needs to know.

Onitakemaru

Voiced by: Rikiya Koyama

A former pirate who was captured by Kuchii in the past which leads to some resentment.

  • Killed Offscreen: We don't get to see his final battle against Fuheng but his broken naginata and Fuheng's dialogue confirms his death.
  • More Teeth than the Osmond Family: Has a mouth full of sharp teeth.
  • Now That's Using Your Teeth!: Catches an arrow between his teeth completely accidentally when fired upon by archers.
  • Oni: His design definitely invokes the imagery with his ruddy skin, sharp teeth and kanabō club.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: He allies with Kuchii only because he wants to defeat him in a duel without the Mongols getting in the way.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: When Zhāng procures the exiles a boat to escape the island, Onitakemaru is the only one to accept the offer and leave. He has a change of heart and returns just in time to save Kuchii later on.
  • Super-Strength: He tears through his wooden shackles like paper at the beginning of the story.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Despite his inhuman strength, Onitakemaru tends to just swing his club wildly in battle. This gives him problems against warriors that are skilled and strong such as Fuheng.

Shiraishi Kazuhisa

Voiced by: Kenji Nomura

A former Gokenin noble of Kamakura who lost his lands and title.

  • Face Death with Dignity: After being mortally wounded by Kuchii, Kazuhisa calmly accepts defeat and sits down waiting for Kuchii to execute him.
  • I've Come Too Far: Despite feeling remorse over his betrayal of his comrades, Kazuhisa decides he's too far gone to change anything and continues working under the Mongols.
  • Manly Tears: Kazuhisa sheds some after seeing the destruction of Kokufu, since it reminds him of the destruction of his own city.
  • Mounted Combat: Mentions that this is his preferred speciality of combat. Although he's no slouch on foot as Kuchii found out in their duel to the death.
  • Number Two: Kazuhisa serves as this to Kuchii after the latter becomes the de facto head of the Tsushima forces. It's why Kuchii takes Kazuhisa's betrayal so hard.
  • The Promise: Before Kazuhisa is executed, he makes Kuchii swear that he won't give up fighting for the people of Tsushima like Kazuhisa had done.
  • The Quisling: Kazuhisa takes Obusama's idea of selling out the location of the Tsushima forces in exchange for being made nobles once again after the Mongol Empire conquers Japan.
  • Suicide by Cop: Rather than go back to the Mongols and be killed for his failings, Kazuhisa decides to wait for Kuchii to find him and goes out via a duel to the death instead.

Zhāng Míngfú (Chō Minpuku)

Voiced by: Shirō Saitō

A diminutive man from Song China and a former merchant who claims to have been the richest man in Hakozaki and have a treasure hidden away.

  • The Load: Due to not having any combat skill at all combined with his age preventing him from doing any hard labour, he is seen as this by the other characters.
  • Miniature Senior Citizens: He is comically short due to this trope, being even smaller than the child Amushi.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Whilst the others are out fighting, he manages to procure a boat that he intends to sail to the safety of mainland Japan with. Only to end up running straight into the Mongolian naval forces.
  • Token Minority: Is the only non-Japanese member of the Exiles or the Tsushima residents.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: In the anime at least, his fate is unknown after encountering the Mongolian navy. Unlike Onitakemaru he was probably captured and/or killed.

Amushi

Voiced by: Shun Horie

A boy arrested for thievery. He has an excellent night vision and often scouts for the group.

  • Army Scout: With his youth, ability to climb and good senses, Amushi serves as this for Kuchii.
  • Curious as a Monkey: Amushi seems to enjoy climbing and seeing new things, occasionally annoying his allies with his curiosity.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Despite knowing the risk, Amushi acts as a decoy for the refugees to escape the Mongolian forces.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: How he dies, a spear through his chest and falling off of a cliff into the ocean.
  • Innate Night Vision: Amushi seems to have an excellent night vision, which makes him useful as a scout.
  • Lying to Protect Your Feelings: He tells Sana that Tatsu is still alive and fighting in order to protect her feelings since she was in charge of leading the refugees to safety.
  • Ship Tease: With fellow child, Sana. His crush on her is the reason he stays behind to fight alongside the other Exiles.

Hitari

Voiced by: Ryōta Takeuchi

An aloof man and an excellent archer.

  • Aloof Archer: Despite many of the Exiles using bows at various points, Hitari stands out as "the archer" with his dedication to the art, his stoicism and his use of stealth.
  • Badasses Wear Bandanas: Hitari is never seen without his trademark bandana on and despite it casting a shadow over his eyes he's still an expert shot.
  • Does Not Like Guns: Although in Hitari's case it's the sheer impracticality of early firearms rather than objecting to them ethically.
  • Go Out with a Smile: After realising that he's about to be killed by a bunch of archers, Hitari simply smiles as he wouldn't have it any other way.
"Like I said, arrows really are the best after all..."
  • Irony: After insulting Teruhi's skill, she replies that she'll get him back one day by using the marking on his bandana as a bullseye which Hitari scoffs at. After having a rain of arrows immobilise his limbs, Hitari is finished off by one of the Mongolian archers shooting him through the mark on his bandana.
  • I Was Just Passing Through: Despite claiming telling Kuchii that he would head into the mountains for safety after his mission was complete, he sticks around to pull a Big Damn Heroes and brushes it off as this trope.
  • Master Archer: In a cast of skilled archers, Hitari is easily the best shot.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: After seeing the non-combatant Dōen killed whilst protecting his patients, Hitari goes berserk and shoots down all of the Mongolian cannoneers which leads to him getting surrounded by the rest of the squadron.
  • The Stoic: Easily has some of the fewest lines of any major character and rarely emotes beyond a bored affect.

Dōen

Voiced by: Yūsuke Kobayashi

A monk and self-proclaimed doctor despite his youth.

  • The Atoner: Became a doctor and monk to atone for the sins of his past.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Upon seeing the Mongloian forces had caught up with them, Dōen shields his patients with his body, causing him to die of a gunshot wound.
  • Improbable Age: Despite being at most a teenager, he is a skilled healer able to concoct medicine and suture up wounds.
  • The Medic: His primary role in the group.
  • Noodle Incident: What exactly lead to his exilement is left unclear beyond vague allusions to using his knowledge of medicine to kill people.
  • The Stoic: Rarely talks beyond what's necessary nor deviates much from his stern expression.

    Mongol Empire

Hindun (Kudun)

Voiced by: Show Hayami

The Marshal of the Mongol forces invading both Tsushima and later Japan.

  • Big Bad: Given that we don't see Kublai Khan who ordered the invasion, Hindun acts as this for the story.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: Has a deep, booming voice to show he's in full command of the rowdy invaders.
  • Face Framed in Shadow: Until the final episode his face is always masked by shadows with only his eyes shown.
  • Frontline General: Averted, unlike his subordinates Hindun never feels the need to leave the safety of his ship surrounded by the Mongol fleet.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Since he doesn't directly interact with any of the Japanese characters he comes across as this.
  • Invincible Villain: Due to the Foregone Conclusion of history, Hindun would not be defeated until later during the second invasion of Japan.
  • No Historical Figures Were Harmed: Based off of the real histrocial figure who lead the invasion of Tsushima.

Uriyan Edei

Voiced by: Kentarō Tone

Mongolian royalty and a Mingghan general.

  • Affably Evil: Uriyan is a pretty laid back guy and is genuinely nice to his subordinates. But he's still a Mongolian general with all the Rape, Pillage, and Burn that comes with it.
  • Fat Bastard: Uriyan is notably more rotund than his fellow generals and displays more racism than most of his allies. Even the Koreans soldiers working alongside his aren't immune from his cruelty.
  • A Father to His Men: In contrast to the other commanders, Uriyan deeply cares for the lives of his men and avoids strategies that would needlessly throw away their lives.
  • Frontline General: Desperately wants to be this, but having no combat skills means that he's a prime target for the enemy and Uriyan narrowly avoids an arrow strike from Kuchii which puts some sense into him and he stops going to the frontlines.
  • Love at First Sight: Falls headlong in love with Tsurihi after laying eyes on her and demands that his men capture her alive so he can make her his mistress.
  • Oh, Crap!: Has one when Kuchii goes straight for his head and only Uriyan's second in command is able to block the strike.
  • The Strategist: What he makes up for in combat ability is his tactical mind in routing the enemy forces.

Liu Fuheng (Ryū Fukukō)

Voiced by: Takehito Koyasu

A Jurchen Vice-marshal.

  • Agent Peacock: Despite Fuheng's effeminent nature and his eyeliner he is still a deadly commander and fighter.
  • Blood Knight: He loves the thrill of battle and actively seeks out any strong opponents.
  • Cultured Badass: Is introduced playing a Morin Khuur (a Mongolian stringed instrument) in his spare time.
  • Frontline General: Repeatedly leads his squadrons from the front in battle but unlike Uriyan can actually hold his own in battle.
  • Hero Killer: He is directly responsible for kiling Onitakemaru.
  • Oh, Crap!: Has one when Kuchii overpowers him in their final duel. Fuheng is so terrified of Kuchii that he doesn't even order his men to attack and simply lets him pass.
