Badass Mustache and Badass Beard were merged into Manly Facial Hair. Examples that don't fit or are zero-context are removed. Having facial hair is not enough to qualify. To qualify for Manly Facial Hair, the facial hair must be associated with manliness in some way. Please read the trope description before re-adding to make sure the example qualifies.

* BadassBeard: Kazuhisa is one of the few Japanese characters with facial hair and certainly the most badass among them.

* ALighterShadeOfGrey: They come across as this as barring a few exceptions they still have some honor and principles compared to the invaders.

* AnimalMotifs: Kuchii is compared to a wolf several times.

* BrutalHonesty: Kuchii never minces words and even gets kicked out of a military meeting because he insulted the leader of Tsushima's clans.

* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: [[spoiler:Goes on one after the death of Onitakemaru. He becomes so fierce that many Mongol soldiers become terrified and refuse to attack, simply letting him pass.]]

* OhCrap: Has one when Kuchii goes straight for his head and only Uriyan's second in command is able to block the strike.

to:

* AgentPeacock: Despite Fuheng's effeminent nature and his eyeliner he is still a deadly commander and fighter.
* BladeOnAStick: His personal weapon is a glaive.
* BloodKnight: He loves the thrill of battle and actively seeks out any strong opponents.
* CulturedBadass: Is introduced playing a ''Morin Khuur'' (a Mongolian stringed instrument) in his spare time.
* FrontlineGeneral: Repeatedly leads his squadrons from the front in battle but unlike Uriyan can actually hold his own in battle.
* HeroKiller: [[spoiler:He is directly responsible for kiling Onitakemaru.]]
* OhCrap: [[spoiler:Has one when Kuchii overpowers him in their final duel. Fuheng is so terrified of Kuchii that he doesn't even order his men to attack and simply lets him pass.]]

* AffablyEvil: Uriyan is a pretty laid back guy and is genuinely nice to his subordinates. But he's still a Mongolian general with all the RapePillageAndBurn that comes with it.
* FatBastard: Uriyan is notably more rotund than his fellow generals and displays more racism than most of his allies. Even the Koreans soldiers working alongside his aren't immune from his cruelty.
* AFatherToHisMen: In contrast to the other commanders, Uriyan deeply cares for the lives of his men and avoids strategies that would needlessly throw away their lives.
* FrontlineGeneral: Desperately ''wants'' to be this, but having no combat skills means that he's a prime target for the enemy and Uriyan narrowly avoids an arrow strike from Kuchii which puts some sense into him and he stops going to the frontlines.
* LoveAtFirstSight: Falls headlong in love with Tsurihi after laying eyes on her and demands that his men capture her alive so he can make her his mistress.
* TheStrategist: What he makes up for in combat ability is his tactical mind in routing the enemy forces.

* BigBad: Given that we don't see Kublai Khan who ordered the invasion, Hindun acts as this for the story.
* EvilSoundsDeep: Has a deep, booming voice to show he's in full command of the rowdy invaders.
* FaceFramedInShadow: Until the final episode his face is always masked by shadows with only his eyes shown.
* FrontlineGeneral: Averted, unlike his subordinates Hindun never feels the need to leave the safety of his ship surrounded by the Mongol fleet.
* GreaterScopeVillain: Since he doesn't directly interact with any of the Japanese characters he comes across as this.
* InvincibleVillain: Due to the ForegoneConclusion of history, Hindun would not be defeated until later during the second invasion of Japan.
* NoHistoricalFiguresWereHarmed: Based off of the real histrocial figure who lead the invasion of Tsushima.

* ArcherArchetype: Despite many of the Exiles using bows at various points, Hitari stands out as "the archer" with his dedication to the art, his stoicism and his use of stealth.
* DoesNotLikeGuns: Although in Hitari's case it's the sheer impracticality of early firearms rather than objecting to them ethically.
* {{Irony}}: After insulting Teruhi's skill, she replies that she'll get him back one day by using the marking on his bandana as a bullseye which Hitari scoffs at. [[spoiler:After having a rain of arrows immobilise his limbs, Hitari is finished off by one of the Mongolian archers shooting him through the mark on his bandana.]]
* IWasJustPassingThrough: Despite claiming telling Kuchii that he would head into the mountains for safety after his mission was complete, he sticks around to pull a BigDamnHeroes and brushes it off as this trope.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: [[spoiler:After seeing the non-combatant Dōen killed whilst protecting his patients, Hitari goes berserk and shoots down all of the Mongolian cannoneers which leads to him getting surrounded by the rest of the squadron.]]
* TheStoic: Easily has some of the fewest lines of any major character and rarely emotes beyond a bored affect.

to:

----

* TheAtoner: Became a doctor and monk to atone for the sins of his past.
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:Upon seeing the Mongloian forces had caught up with them, Dōen shields his patients with his body, causing him to die of a gunshot wound.]]
* ImprobableAge: Despite being at most a teenager, he is a skilled healer able to concoct medicine and suture up wounds.
* TheMedic: His primary role in the group.
* NoodleIncident: What exactly lead to his exilement is left unclear beyond vague allusions to using his knowledge of medicine to kill people.
* TheStoic: Rarely talks beyond what's necessary nor deviates much from his stern expression.

* TheLoad: Due to not having any combat skill at all combined with his age preventing him from doing any hard labour, he is seen as this by the other characters.
* MiniatureSeniorCitizens: He is comically short due to this trope, being even smaller than the child Amushi.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: Whilst the others are out fighting, he manages to procure a boat that he intends to sail to the safety of mainland Japan with. [[spoiler:Only to end up running straight into the Mongolian naval forces.]]
* TokenMinority: Is the only non-Japanese member of the Exiles or the Tsushima residents.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: [[spoiler:In the anime at least, his fate is unknown after encountering the Mongolian navy. Unlike Onitakemaru he was probably captured and/or killed.]]

to:

----

* ArmyScout: With his youth, ability to climb and good senses, Amushi serves as this for Kuchii.
* CuriousAsAMonkey: Amushi seems to enjoy climbing and seeing new things, occasionally annoying his allies with his curiosity.
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:Despite knowing the risk, Amushi acts as a decoy for the refugees to escape the Mongolian forces.]]
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: [[spoiler:How he dies, a spear through his chest and falling off of a cliff into the ocean.]]
* InnateNightVision: Amushi seems to have an excellent night vision, which makes him useful as a scout.
* LyingToProtectYourFeelings: He tells Sana that [[spoiler:Tatsu is still alive and fighting]] in order to protect her feelings since she was in charge of leading the refugees to safety.
* ShipTease: With fellow child, Sana. His crush on her is the reason he stays behind to fight alongside the other Exiles.

* MoreTeethThanTheOsmondFamily: Has a mouth full of sharp teeth.

* {{Oni}}: His design definitely invokes the imagery with his ruddy skin, sharp teeth and kanabō club.
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: He allies with Kuchii only because he wants to defeat him in a duel without the Mongols getting in the way.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: When Zhāng procures the exiles a boat to escape the island, Onitakemaru is the only one to accept the offer and leave. [[spoiler:He has a change of heart and returns just in time to save Kuchii later on.]]
* SuperStrength: He tears through his wooden shackles like paper at the beginning of the story.
