Airforce Delta

    Airforce Delta Protagonist

The unnamed, faceless, and voiceless protagonist of the original Airforce Delta.
  • Ace Pilot: Being the protagonist of a game that revolves around fighting with cool planes, they're naturally this.
  • Ambiguous Gender: Their gender is never specified.
  • Featureless Protagonist: The player character is never given any characterization other than the fact that they were recruited into Delta Squadron to fight for Laconia.
  • New Meat: They're recruited into Delta as soon as the story begins. It doesn't take long for them to become a badass fighter, though.
  • No Name Given: Their name is never revealed.
  • The Voiceless: The player character never speaks.
    Zan Daas

Airforce Delta Storm

    General Tropes
  • Flat Character: None of this game's characters, good or evil, have any real depth aside from being focused on their mission objectives and/or their current situation.
  • No Name Given: Not a single character in this game has his or her name revealed.

Delta 3rd Element

    Ken Thomas
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ken_thomas.jpg
The 3rd Element 3rd position of Delta Squadron and technically the game's main protagonist since it focuses mainly on him. He is a tough and brooding pilot determined to get revenge on the O.C.C. for seemingly killing his girlfriend when the O.C.C. attacked and destroyed the space station they used to be pilots for.
  • Blue Is Heroic: His planes are colored blue and despite his vengeful nature, he's still a heroic character who wants to save the Earth.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: He's the brooding boy to Ellen's gentle girl when the latter isn't brainwashed.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: Good scars. He has a scar on his nose which he gained while fleeing the space station when it was being attacked in his backstory.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: The in-between of 3rd Element. He's not as rude or arrogant as John, but he's also not as friendly or as focused on protecting his allies as Ruth since he's focused on the O.C.C.'s destruction for much of the early game.
  • Perpetual Frowner: The number of times he smiles in the game can be counted with fingers on one hand.

    Ruth Valentine
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ruth_valentine.jpg
The leader of the 3rd Element of Delta Squadron. A young woman who initially wanted to be a civilian pilot, but joined the air force as the battles intensified. She gained the rank of captain at just 22 and left the regular army for Delta to outpace the achievements of her father who was a pilot in Delta who mysteriously vanished, but shared war stories with his daughter that led her to idealize Delta. Ruth was disappointed to see that Delta had become a Ragtag Band of Misfits, but nevertheless fights alongside them. She is determined to keep all of her people safe using any means necessary.
  • Action Girl: Being a playable female fighter pilot, she's naturally this.
  • Badass Adorable: A cute young lady who kicks ass in a fighter jet.
  • Disappeared Dad: Her father was a pilot in Delta, but he went MIA and his current status and whereabouts are unknown.
  • Ensign Newbie: She was appointed as the leader of Delta 3rd Element even though she became a fighter pilot just recently and therefore has almost no combat experience at the start of the game. Because of this, John often refuses to follow orders from her.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Downplayed if not outright averted; while she certainly has a nice body, a cute face, and large breasts, her attractiveness is never used as a plot point or even commented on by other characters.
  • Nice Girl: Slightly downplayed. While she does get frustrated a lot with her wingmates and doesn't always see eye-to-eye with Lilia, she's generally nice and pleasant when you talk to her in the meeting room or at the runway.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: The nice one of 3rd Element. She's generally much friendlier than her wingmates Ken and John and is focused almost exclusively on protecting her allies, unlike Ken who wants to wipe out all of his enemies to get revenge on them and John who's obsessed with constantly improving his kill score.
  • Pink Means Feminine: While she herself isn't overtly feminine, her planes are colored pink.
  • The Smurfette Principle: Since Ellen is a Secret Character, it's entirely possible for Ruth to be Delta's only female pilot.
  • The Squadette: She's the only Delta pilot to be female for the majority of the game. Ellen also becomes this if you unlock her.

    John Rundal
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/john_rundal.jpg
The 3rd Element 2nd position of Delta Squadron. He is the sole surviving member of a squadron that was entirely wiped out before the game's events. This led others to view him as a Dirty Coward and even set out to kill him, though he was able to survive and he got transferred to Delta Squadron for having a bad reputation and an inability to work with others. He is largely focused on racking up kills in order to silence those who doubted him and his arrogant nature makes him unwilling to follow orders from his inexperienced element leader, Ruth.
  • Ace Pilot: Many of his planes have a large number of kill marks on them, and he's determined to prove he's the best when it comes to dogfighting.
  • Blood Knight: He's always enthusiastic to participate in dogfights.
  • Foe Romance Subtext: When he and Francine meet, they quickly become enamored with each other due to their Blood Knight natures despite being on opposing sides.
  • Jerkass: He tends to be rude, arrogant, and condescending to other pilots, especially the less experienced ones like Brian and his own element leader, Ruth.
    • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: However, whenever an ally is hit by a missile, he'll tell them, "Don't die on us now." or "Break and fall back!" if they take a large amount of damage, showing that he does care about his wingmates. When an ally is hit by bullets, he'll even encourage them not to 'let a little thing like that stop them'.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: In the first mission, he disobeys direct orders and breaks off from destroying the bombers to go after more fighters.
  • Military Maverick: He frequently disobeys direct orders from his own element leader, but nevertheless comes out on top. This is especially apparent in his secret mission "Lone Wolf" where he breaks off from the rest of the squadron to fight a large enemy squadron all by himself and in the process, he helps prevent damage to his allies.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: The mean one of 3rd Element, needless to say. He's a rude and arrogant loner who seemingly disregards his allies and will stop at nothing to improve his score.

Delta 1st Element

    Jamie Jones
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jamie_jones.jpg
The leader of the 1st Element of Delta Squadron. A relatively old and seasoned pilot who was war buddies with the founding members of Delta and Ruth's Disappeared Dad, he was transferred to Delta for consistently refusing to fly a jet in favor of old propeller planes. He's an incredibly skilled, but eccentric and stubborn pilot.
  • Alliterative Name: Jamie Jones.
  • Born in the Wrong Century: He's an old guy from World War II who brushes aside the age of jet engines entirely despite the fact they technically were invented then. To the point he takes flight with your unit...using such planes as a P51 Mustang or IL-2 Sturmovik in dogfights! Against modern aircraft, and even futuristic experimental craft! Amazingly enough, the AI Jamie will occasionally score kills since rockets deal the most damage, usually a one-shot kill for low-armoured planes.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: He tends to be a bit eccentric due to his obsession with propeller planes and he also enjoys drinking and gambling, much to the chagrin of Lilia, but nevertheless, he's a surprisingly skilled and competent pilot who can hold his own against fighter jets despite using a prop plane.
  • But Now I Must Go: If you don't unlock his secret ending mission Decision, he appears in the briefing for Departure (the normal alternative to Decision and both missions are where Delta uses an HLV to go up into space), but there, he's unable to ditch his propeller planes in favor of a jet which he has to do since only jets can be equipped to fly through space if he wants to stick with the team. Therefore, he stays on Earth with the ground troops while the rest of Delta goes up into space and he's not seen or heard from again after that.
  • Cool Old Guy: Well, 52 is debatably that old, but what else can you say about a man who can shoot down modern fighters with an old and frail propeller plane with no guided weapons?
  • Earn Your Bad Ending: His secret ending mission Decision where he unfortunately has to do a Heroic Sacrifice requires you to complete at least five missions, not including stand-bys or intercepts, with him. Using slow and frail prop planes with no guided weapons makes these missions more difficult, needless to say, making his death in Decision even more of a slap in the face. However, this trope can be averted in a New Game Plus since you can play five missions with Jamie while using any of the Guest Fighters like the Vic Viper in each mission.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: In the optional Decision mission, just after deciding that he will take to the sky in a jet if that's what it takes to stay in action, he crashes his F-86 into an enemy mook that was preventing the launch of a shuttle used to ferry the other characters into space, killing himself in the process but allowing the rest of the Delta force to join the impending showdown against the O.C.C..
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Rick. The two are prone to arguing with each other due to their contrasting tastes in planes (slow prop planes for Jamie and fast jets for Rick), but nevertheless, they're good friends deep down and Rick does little to hide his sadness when Jamie decides not to go with the rest of Delta into space.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: As mentioned in But Now I Must Go above, he stays on Earth if Departure is played instead and we don't know what comes of him after that.

    Rick Campbell
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rick_campbell.jpg
The 1st Element 2nd position of Delta Squadron. A pilot who's always crazy for speed and is a devotee of the school of hit-and-run, he's infatuated with fast planes and enjoys overtaking his enemies before shooting them down. He ended up being part of Delta for unexplained reasons and was forced to be in the 1st Element with Jamie whose tastes in planes are completely different. Because of this, they tend to argue a lot, but despite this, they have no real contempt for each other.
  • Ambiguous Situation: After the missile-launching facility is destroyed in his and Alex's final mission, they're seen flying through space, towards Mars, and Rick says he's flying on vapor and after he and Alex briefly chat, the cutscene ominously ends with the latter saying he can't see the rescue ships, leaving his and Rick's fates unknown... However, if Ken's ending, which is technically the Golden Ending, is unlocked, Lilia says that all Delta pilots besides Ken and Ellen have gone off to intercept missiles approaching Earth, suggesting that Rick and Alex are, in fact, still alive.
  • Artistic License – Biology: It's surprising that he's able to fit comfortably in the cockpit of a fighter jet, given the limited space and the high G-forces experienced during flight.
  • Big Fun: The fattest character in the game and one of the most enjoyable to be around.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: To a slightly lesser extent than Jamie since he knows that it might not be the best time to party when things are heating up, but he's still a wild pilot who won't shut up about how important speed is to him. Despite this, he's still a competent and dependable fighter pilot with powerful planes.
  • Butt-Monkey: Being part of 1st Element, a squadron that specializes in confined areas due to their unique planes and skills, means he's often forced to fly much slower than he wants to. He's also none too pleased with having to participate in annoyingly difficult escort missions.
  • Cool Plane: Many of his planes, in addition to being fast, are also incredibly well-suited to their roles. For instance, he has an Su-37 Terminator which has excellent mobility and the incredibly powerful long-ranged air-to-air missile as its special weapon as well as several tough and powerful attackers like his F-111F which has guided bombs.
  • Fat Best Friend: To Jamie and Alex.
  • Field Promotion: When Delta goes up into space and Jamie has to stay on Earth due to being unable to abandon his prop planes, Rick replaces him as the leader of 1st Element. This likely is also the case if Jamie's secret ending mission Decision where he dies is played.
  • Nice Guy: He's generally polite and jolly to others the majority of the time even though he argues with Jamie a lot.
  • Speed Demon: His most notable trait is his obsession with speed.
  • Stout Strength: He has considerable muscle, though he never uses it in any onscreen scenarios.
  • Uncertain Doom: As mentioned in Ambiguous Situation above, he and Alex end up drifting through space towards Mars with little fuel left and no rescue ships in sight, leaving their fates unknown... Although Lilia's dialogue if Ken's ending is unlocked suggests that they may have made it back.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Jamie. The two frequently argue since their planes of choice are very different (fast jets for Rick and slow prop planes for Jamie), but nevertheless, they're good friends deep down and Rick is visibly saddened by Jamie not going into space with the rest of Delta.

    Alex Levine
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/alex_levine.jpg
The 1st Element 3rd position of Delta Squadron. After growing up from a rough childhood, he became a pilot in the military at an unknown point and taught himself how to fly a VTOL when no one volunteered for a mission that required flying a VTOL plane. After that, the head of Delta Squadron, Robert Williams, invited Alex and he transferred, figuring he'd be useful to them. He became part of 1st Element and he's considerably more humble and down-to-earth than his wild wingmates. Notable for being Delta's only VTOL pilot, though he also has some standard planes.
  • Ambiguous Situation: After he and Rick destroy the missile-launching facility in their final mission, they then fly through space, towards Mars, with Rick saying he's flying on vapor and after he briefly chats with Alex, the cutscene ends on an ominous note with the latter saying he can't see the rescue ships, leaving his and Rick's fates unknown... However, if Ken's ending, which is the Golden Ending in technical terms, is unlocked, Lilia mentions that all Delta pilots besides Ken and Ellen have gone off to intercept missiles approaching Earth, suggesting that Rick and Alex may still be alive.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: He's the most sensible member of 1st Element and thus, he tries to keep his eccentric comrades in check.
  • Only Sane Man: The most logical and down-to-earth member of 1st Element by a long shot.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: His character profile mentions that his hobby is knitting. Also, on very rare occasions, you can get a conversation between him and Amelia where he teaches the latter how to knit.
  • Uncertain Doom: As mentioned in Ambiguous Situation above, he and Rick are shown drifting through space with not much fuel left and no nearby rescue ships, leaving them with unknown fates... Although Lilia's dialogue if Ken's ending is unlocked hints at their survival.
