MLLSD Chapter 3: Fanservice, Hold The Twist

The comic begins with 4koma strips that don't fit the theme.

Yuuki admires the Anglerfish Team's team logos on the back of their Panzer jackets, and Aya makes one for their team. Unfortunately, she fails to heed Azusa's warning and tries sewing it on Yuuki's jacket while Yuuki is still wearing it.

Miho meets with Karina and tries to give her a lecture on driving the M3 Lee, which literally goes in one ear and out the other. When Karina shows off her skills, however, she does a good technique, but can't explain how she came up with it.

Karina, talking with Azusa, says that tanks are strong, but no match for a Kaiju or other monster, as though it is a deeply profound thought. She watches some movies with Saki (whose hair looks remarkably similar to hers in black and white, having the same style), and falls asleep with her head in her lap.

Three pairs of individuals try to give each other piggyback rides like Katyusha and Nonna. Yukari gives one to Miho, liking Miho's "ass and thighs," but drops her when Momo calls out to Miho. Hana does the same with an unwilling Saori, indicating that in the MLLSD continuity, Hana has something of a crush on Saori. Lastly, Mako inflicts the same thing on Sodoko by mounting her.

Noriko admits that she misses volleyball due to only doing tankery (although their last scene with dialogue in the anime indicates that they've come to love both tankery and volleyball), and, suffering from withdrawal, mistakes Akebi's breasts for volleyball and spikes them. Shinobu, a tall but flat-chested member of Duck Team, tries to get her to do this with actual volleyballs, but Noriko spikes Taeko instead.

The non-4koma part begins, with Anzu announcing a sports test. Miho wonders if this is an annual event, but Hana says it's on the president's whim. Momo and Yuzu say the quiz (apparently from a sound drama that the translators say they will never translate) was for evaluating their minds, and this will evaluate their physical fitness.

Naturally, Duck Team gets fired up, with Noriko declaring that they will overcome the shame they suffered in the quiz, and with Shinobu taking umbrage at her self-deprecation. In their zeal, they jump into the pool fist, not realizing that it hadn't been cleaned first (which is a fatal mistake in real life). Rabbit Team complains, but Yuzu says that the swimming club gave them the pool for free use on the condition that they clean it up, with Azusa saying that it's a good deal. Unfortunately, five of the team goes running simultaneously, with Azusa trying to stop them, and all of them plow into Miho, who is cleaning the pool.

It's somewhat unfortunate that in these comedic segments, the characters who are eccentric but often quite effective, essentially become little more than incompetent comic relief.

As Miho is dazed from the impact and seeing "so many asses," Sodoko berates the first-years for being too hyper, and not wearing the School Swimsuit. Ayumi, unfazed, points out that Sodoko's swimsuit has "Sodoko," rather than her last name, and Sodoko is horrified, believing that Mako is responsible. As Sodoko hastily points out that her last name should be there, Rabbit Team and Gomoyo (whose swimsuit incorrectly says "Pazomi" in that panel; I'm not sure if it's a translator or artist mistake) smile with amusement.

Sodoko storms off to blame Mako for her humiliation, but Mako sleepily says that it's hot and asks for Sodoko's "helmet," which is actually her hair.

Anteater Team comes out, in fairly revealing swimsuits, having taken a while to change due to not being used to it. While they're grateful for having a chance to do this as a result of doing tankery, the consequences of P Iyotan not being to a pool in ten years and Momogawa not being out in the sun in twelve years (keep in mind that as a freshman, she is probably 14 or 15), and they pass out as quickly as they got eliminated in the finals, as Sodoko points out.

Saori laments that it will take forever at the rate they're going, and her point is driven home when Hana arranges the weeds around the brooms. Momo orders the girls to get it done by the end of the day, but gets shot by Hippo Team's water fight, and hit by two brooms in a duel between Oryou and Saemonza, with the latter making a Shout-Out to the real Saemonza's Famous Last Words.

As the duel concludes in a draw, Erwin decides to get to work, but realizes that her swimsuit has dissolved far more quickly than she anticipated; as I said before, I have to wonder what the point of a swimsuit that dissolves in water is.

Sodoko, at the terminal end of her patience, calls in 100 Morals Committee members to get the job done, as the team watches in awe. Sodoko declares that the others should watch to see how it's done, calling Mako by her nickname. Anzu declares that it went as she planned, and Saori's incredulous that there was a plan to begin with.

Leopon Team finishes up their maintenance work, with their swimsuits under their coveralls to allow for fast changing. As they consider whether to use a "water bike," Alisa shows up in a Paper-Thin Disguise to steal Oarai's classified information, with Leopon Team, despite never having met Alisa, already suspicious.

Again, the Oarai-centric MLLSD ones are a bit weaker than the others, since most of the supporting cast is somewhat one-note as far as humor goes. Furthermore, it's a bit surprising that they're doing straight up Fanservice after parodying the Beach Episode in the first OVA.

Next Installment: Alisa's infiltration goes about as well as could be expected, but she ends up bringing additional guests along.
