* ScrappyMechanic: There's always a chance that a special unit will spawn right before the exit just to screw you over if your health is already low, especially on higher difficulty levels. Diamond Heist is a special case since it doesn't have a defined escape route, but should the vault codes work during the stealth portion, you may have SWAT and special units spawn in the balconies above you the moment you start stealing the diamonds. Players who know of this ambush may purposely be spotted by the guards after disabling the security system during stealth so that the cops spawn in elsewhere instead of the diamonds room.

* ContinuitySnarl: The games's sequel doesn't make it clear as to which heists are canonical to the games' storyline, as all the heists in this game have been refitted in the sequel. Things like Undercover, Counterfeit and Panic Room are very ambiguous in their canonicity (while they could reasonably happen twice, it's unlikely the antagonists were stupid enough to have the same scenario play out), while the Heat street remake has Bain mention the heist to "feel familiar". Curiously, the inverse is true of No Mercy, which is non-canon in this game, but Payday 2 retcons the Left for Dead allusions in the heist, and makes it canonical there instead.

Difficulty Spike became a YMMV trope

Added DiffLines:

** Going from Hard to [[HarderThanHard Overkill]] was usually a bit jarring for the first timer. This was made easier in a later patch, but then came [[SerialEscalation Overkill 145+]] difficulty... and that's another spike entirely, see HarderThanHard below.
** If you're playing each level in order, Heat Street is this trope. Many first time players who play Heat Street after First World Bank get to see just how brutal cops can be as they shoot at you from several yards down the street and cover is very poor.

* MagnificentBastard: [[TheFaceless Bain]] is the [[AffablyEvil friendly,]] enigmatic creator of CRIME.NET and the titular gang's main contractor. [[BenevolentBoss Genuinely caring about the gang]], Bain does the majority of the planning for their first eight heists, which go off without a problem. [[VideoGame/Payday2 Two years later]] Bain helps Dallas out of retirement by sending him on two training missions and then proceeding to organize Hoxton's escape from prison with help of the Dentist. After befriending a Murkywater operative named Locke, Locke seemingly betrays the crew, however Bain is able to escort them out before finding out that Locke is trustworthy and advising the gang to trust Locke at all costs before being captured. Bain kills several Murkywater guards in his injured state before being escorted off of Hell's Island and finding out he has a deadly virus. Planning one final heist on the White House, Bain successfully gets the gang to steal twenty four presidential pardons before either [[FaceDeathWithDignity gracefully succumbing to the virus]] or being reincarnated as the 46th President of the United States if the Ark of the Watcher is activated. Against killing civilians and capable of kindness, Bain proves to be an effective yet [[NobleDemon noble]] mastermind.

* InternetBackdraft: The fan base exploded after learning about the final conditions needed to be met in order to see the secret that [[TeasingCreator Overkill kept teasing people about for months with extremely vague and possibly trollish clues]]. In order to see the secret in First World Bank, every player has to be wearing the golden masks, which can only be obtained by beating the first 6 levels on [[NintendoHard Overkill 145+]]. From there, everyone has to stand on specific tiles to make a switch appear and using the switch reveals a hidden door that has to be drilled for ''two hours'' in order to open it. From there, to open the hidden vault, players have to press specific tiles in a specific order since doing it wrong releases instant kill gas. What was behind the vault? A cache of gold bars (which are useless to most people attempting the challenge since they're maxed out in their rep levels) and a sneak peak at some masks.
** It didn't end there. Players who got into the vault saw a message of congratulations from Overkill and in order to qualify for the masks and other possible prizes, they have to send a video recording showing their successful attempt in reaching the secret vault. On top of this, Overkill stated in the forums that players who have not reached the vault yet [[TemporaryOnlineContent would only have 30 days to do it or the secret could possibly be lost]]. The fan base was extremely pissed off by the 2-hour wait on the drill, players being excluded from the challenge because they didn't have the golden masks but had helped everyone else were find the clues pointing towards the bank, having to record video proof of their success when not everyone's computers can record and play games at the same time, losing progress when they are disconnected from the game thanks to Steam or their internet service provider's not too stable connection, and the fact that a cache of money and new masks was simply not worth the struggle.
** The complaints rose even higher when Overkill made a second prize for the secret group, which was (supposedly) a select few people being chosen to attend an event where they would get to see Payday 2 in person and gotten autographed masks. Even though there are quite a handful of people who got in (852 people to be exact), many others are still sour about being left out, including people within the group who were not picked to go to the event or simply couldn't make it.
** The fan base exploded into a nuclear cloud of anger when the developers said they felt the game was "complete", meaning all the main content and components are there and finished. Fans declared Overkill to be complete thieves and liars, saying they were promised more levels before release. When the developers also called out on the nasty behavior of the community, the community fired back by saying the developers are not being "professional".

* HarsherInHindsight: '''The No Mercy heist'''. When it was reintroduced in [[VideoGame/PAYDAY2 the sequel]] as part of Crimefest 2018, a lot of the elements for the heist stayed the same, albeit with a major story difference: [[spoiler: Unlike the other Classic heists, which were present-day revisits with the occasional bit of additional story elements here and there, No Mercy is presented as a flashback to when it happened in this game. Instead of a giant payday, Bain took the "shady" job up for the third-party client because he would receive Cagliostro's manuscript (an item that Bain deems to be important for the future) in exchange for the virus they take from the hospital. It's revealed from information from this heist and the heist on Hell's Island that said client eventually wound up selling the virus to ''Murkywater''. The Murkies would then go on to inject a strain of the same virus into Bain when he gets captured late on in Payday 2's storyline, and he winds up dying because of it after the gang's final heist of the game]]. While it is presented in Payday: The Heist as a fun little non-canon crossover, in Payday 2, [[spoiler: not only is the non-canon nature of the heist retconned, but No Mercy turns out to be the heist that would eventually doom Bain]].

*** Overkill, in their time-honored tradition of making things even harder, added another Bulldozer with a skull decal on their facemask in the new Death Wish difficulty. In addition to being even more heavily armored, they also come packing a light machine gun, making them dangerous at long range as well.
** Shields: An upper level SWAT unit with a shield that can withstand everything short of an explosion or a high level Enforcer's melee attack (assuming he took the skill). What's particularly annoying is that if they are fixated on you, they will always point their shield towards you, necessitating another player to flank it. If you're playing with only AI, you're in for a pretty bad situation. It doesn't help that the police can shoot through it while you can't shoot back.

Players who got into the vault saw a message of congratulations from Overkill and in order to qualify for the masks and other possible prizes, they have to send a video recording showing their successful attempt in reaching the secret vault. On top of this, Overkill stated in the forums that players who have not reached the vault yet [[TemporaryOnlineContent would only have 30 days to do it or the secret could possibly be LostForever. lost]]. The fan base was extremely pissed off by the 2 hour 2-hour wait on the drill, players being excluded from the challenge because they didn't have the golden masks but had helped everyone else were find the clues pointing towards the bank, having to record video proof of their success when not everyone's computers can record and play games at the same time, losing progress when they are disconnected from the game thanks to Steam or their internet service provider's not too stable connection, and the fact that a cache of money and new masks was simply not worth the struggle.
