** Storm Over The Desert is very transparently based on Operation Desert Storm, which concluded just before the game's release.
** The music themed, psychedelic Manchester is likely a reference to the "Madchester" music scene that declined in the early 90's.

Bob. Both levels are absolutely flooded with screens that immediately begin with pits in front of you where you can't see them coming, and the randomly spawning obstacles often appear in spots where they are impossible to avoid. By comparison, the rest of the game is a breeze.
*** Level 5 Cheetahmen. This is the first level where you play as Apollo, who has the misfortune of being a TierInducedScrappy, as his only attack is a crossbow that is almost impossible to aim, due to the wonky jumping physics. The enemies and their positions are absolutely not designed with Apollo's attack in mind, as they are all very small targets that home in Apollo incredibly quickly, making them almost impossible to hit. As if that wasn't bad enough, while this level does contain a warp that lets the player skip it, taking the warp cause the game to glitch out, making the warp useless.

* UnfortunateCharacterDesign: In the third screen of the NES Cheetahmen's intro sequence, one of the trio's tails is sticking between his legs in a way that looks more than a little phallic. The illusion is made even worse by the fact that we only see the Cheetahman from about thigh-up in that screen.
* WhatAnIdiot: So, Active Enterprises wants to cash in on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles craze by having their own mutant anthro animal hero fighters that would lead to a MerchandiseDriven franchise, and so they start with a video game, with the Cheetahmen being a "selling point".
** You would expect: To simply focus all effort on the Cheetahmen license, have the game called "Cheetahmen" and actually have the audience that likes TMNT to find more of the same. And sell the cartridge at an affordable, accessible price.
** Except: They decide to spread their efforts and resources into 51 extra mini-games that distract from the main license (that even gets overshadowed in the title). The Cheetahmen game itself becomes as broken and cheap as it could be, the mainstream audience barely notices the characters when glancing at the cartridge and would have little to no interest into buying a NES game with the price of a full console.
