* FalseAdvertising: The SSB series puts a lot of incorrect ideas and interpretations of each franchise into many fans' heads:
** ''{{Pokemon}}'': The trainers (who are different with every installment) are the real heroes of the series, not Pikachu!
** ''[[{{F-Zero}} F-Zero]]'': Since this series appears to be nigh forgotten now, most Captain Falcon fans know nothing about the series. And when they find out that F-Zero is "just a racing game" and that there is no Falcon Punch in any of the games, well...
** ''{{Metroid}}'': Zero Suit Samus, at least. When she's only ending eye candy in most Metroid games and only briefly playable in one game of the whole series...

That part wasn\'t necessary.

* GenreBusting: There's still some debate over whether it should be classified as a "true" FightingGame on par with StreetFighter or MortalKombat, or a multiplayer-party game with FightingGame elements. What you call it generally aligns with which side of the StopHavingFunGuys argument you fall on, whether you've played ''PowerStone'', and to what extent you hated ''ShaqFu''.

* CuteGiant: The series often invokes this with giant versions of small characters. Giant Yoshi was an especially memorable case of this.
** Via a glitch, it is possible to get Jigglypuff to be absolutely huge in ''Brawl''.
** DoshinTheGiant, though his game never made it to North America, did have a trophy in ''SuperSmashBrosMelee''.

** But, to be fair, it does allow you to create interesting situations that would be impossible otherwise. Such as a fight in only a spike pit, or a level made entirely of thin through platforms. It's possible that they made it so that real appeal would be making levels only for their practicality, rather than aesthetics.

* EnemyMine: By the nature of this plot it's to be expected. The most notable case is between Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf. While standing over Ganondorf's statue, Link and Zelda agree that they do need his help. They awaken him and point him toward the Great Maze. As they walk away, Ganondorf starts loading up an attack to go after them, but realizes that, sadly, he needs their help as much as they need his, and follows along.
