Later games have the mask models closer to the promotional material, though the original Dallas mask returns in PAYDAY 3 as a OldSaveBonus for PAYDAY 2.
* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness:
** Hoxton doesn't have his now demented burned mask, with his mask looking like a SadClown with pink eyelids, which would be given to Houston when Hoxton was initially absent for the sequel.
** This game gives the player three weapon slots at all times as opposed to two, with a dedicated sidearm slot for pistols and revolvers. PAYDAY 2 did away with this in favor of a standard two weapon limit, while PAYDAY 3 treats a third slot as a temporary power-up for limited use powerful weapons.
** With the exception of Diamond Heist, stealth is either not a option or just a means to delay the police arriving (as in Counterfeit and No Mercy). Even in Diamond Heist, being able to stealth it purely up to luck, as the codes have chance to not work and sound the alarm.
** There is no currency system, with money being treated as the experience system for leveling up.
** Skill trees are linear and their unlocks serve as either upgrades and weapon unlocks, alongside crew bonuses. As a result of the leveling system, it's possible to not only fully max out a skill tree, but all of them (even the Technician tree from the Wolf Pack DLC came with a higher level cap to accommodate its addition). PAYDAY 2 went for skill trees, and while PAYDAY 3 has skill lines that seem linear, you still have a limited amount of skill points and you can pick any skill you want as long as you pick the base one, aside from the last one per line.
** Crew bonuses are unique to this game, serving as upgrades to your other players as long as you have it equipped. This was absent in PAYDAY 2 for years, and was later repurposed for being equipped to AI partners for you instead.
** The B9-S pistol and the Mark 11 SMG have suppressors attached to them by default, and there is no way to take them off. On top of that, no other gun has a upgrade allowing a suppressor.
** Masks are treated more restrictedly, with them being treated as sets and each character only have one variation per set (i.e. for the Presidents set, Dallas can only wear the UsefulNotes/RichardNixon mask and cannot wear the masks depicting UsefulNotes/GeorgeWBush, UsefulNotes/BillClinton and UsefulNotes/BarackObama that the other crewmates have).
** There are no assets for heists, so any additional supplies has to be carried by you and there are no ways to add additional events or changes to the heist.
** The cast is more minimalist, with only four heisters and one contractor, as all of the heists are hosted and contracted by Bain.

* ClassicVideoGameScrewYous: This is more apparent on higher difficulty levels in most heists when it's time to escape. There's always a chance that a special unit will spawn right before the exit just to screw you over if your health is already low. Diamond Heist is a special case since it doesn't have a defined escape route, but should the vault codes work during the stealth portion, you may have SWAT and special units spawn in the balconies above you the moment you start stealing the diamonds. Players who know of this ambush may purposely be spotted by the guards after disabling the security system during stealth so that the cops spawn in elsewhere instead of the diamonds room.

Added DiffLines:

* LooseCanon: In the Context of this games' sequel, there are only four heists that are explicitly canon to the lore:
** First World Bank (which is hit twice by the crew, once in each game).
** Heat Street (Bain comments on the situation "feeling familiar").
** No Mercy, rather ironically. (It retcons out most of its allusions to VideoGame/Left4Dead; the Bill cameo remains intact, however, and the infected patient still makes sounds similar to one of the Special Infected, but the mission is treated as a flashback Chains is having in light of recent, very spoiler-ey, news.
** Diamond Heist (explicitly the second time the crew hit the Garnet Group building).
** The rest; Panic Room, Green Bridge, Undercover, Counterfeit, and Slaughterhouse, don't entirely contradict the later events, but they do get remade under the assumption that it's the first time the hit takes place.
