** When Mellie realizes that Andrew broke up with her because Fitz threatened him to, she struts right into the Oval and smacks him in the face.
** PlayedForLaughs by Quinn when she slaps Charlie for not telling her that he was [[spoiler: assigned to kill Quinn]]. Bonus points for the romantic music played in the background.

* NotSoDifferent: Olivia attempts this with Mellie in "We Do Not Touch the First Ladies." It fails. [[spoiler: Olivia thinks Mellie had an affair with Andrew Nichols. While Andrew is in love with Mellie and Mellie reciprocates on some level, they've never had sex. Until "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," when they do.]]

* BigotWithABadge: "The Lawn Chair" deals with a protest sparked by the death of a black teenager at the hands of a white police officer. The officer claims he was acting in self-defense and that the boy had pulled a knife on him. Olivia's team later discovers footage of him planting a knife on the boy after shooting him. Upon his crime being discovered, the officer goes on a racist tirade about the lack of respect "those people" have for police officers.

* ArtisticLicensePolitics: The Season 6 Presidental election is made of this. When [[spoiler: Vargas is assasinated]] on Election Night, Fitz assumes this means Cyrus [[spoiler: will be voted President]]. But David claims that the electors can "vote for whoever they want" and Fitz has to make the final decision. While [[spoiler: the death of a President-elect]] is obviously uncharted territory, the idea electors can "vote for whoever they want" is exaggerated. In the case of a disputed electoral vote, it would be the House, not the President, making the final decision. And that's without [[spoiler: Cyrus arrested for the plot, exonerated at the last minute to challenge Mellie and Mellie voted by the electoral college before it's revealed Vargars' own widow (a woman with no political experience) was behind it in hopes ''she'd'' be named President instead]].

** In the early seasons, Mellie came off somewhat antagonistic because of her manipulative and spiteful nature and being a barrier to Fitz and Olivia being together (Bellamy Young has even been told by fans that Mellie is the character they LoveToHate!). However, season 5 does tell us that many of the immoral things Mellie has done were for Fitz and that she was in fact grateful that Olivia was there to satisfy Fitz because she sure as hell didn't want to. While Fitz had his eyes on Olivia, she was able to gain some dignity as something other than just a wife and mother.
