* "Smash is for good boys and girls!" [[labelnote:Explanation]]In the reveal trailer for Terry Bogard from the ''VideoGame/FatalFury'' & ''VideoGame/TheKingOfFighters'' series, Sakurai had to explain why the series' leading heroine Mai Shiranui didn't even show up as a background character model. In the original Japanese, Sakurai made a joke about how her costume wouldn't make it past the Japanese ratings board (CERO). In the English translation, this was changed to explain that since Smash is "for good boys and girls", she couldn't make it in.[[/labelnote]]

Eventually, the ''Fire Emblem'' Roy also returned via DLC, which is {{Lampshade|Hanging}}d by having Roy show animosity towards the Koopaling and attacking him mid-trailer. A Classic mode clear image on the 3DS version shows them both being pals and riding Roy Koopa's clown car together, and multiple pictures in ''Ultimate'' (one challenge and Roy's Classic victory picture) also have the two together.[[/labelnote]]
