'''''Iconic NPC: Ash'''''Ash Canaan'''''

* DoubleWeapon: When you meet him again in the Ruins, Ash has traded out his saber for a unique Double Saber.

to:

* DistressedDude: The first time you meet him in the "Battle Training" quest, you and Kireek have to rescue him from the terrifying threats of... Forest 1. Apparently ''Rappies'' were too tough for the guy.
* DoubleWeapon: When you meet him again in the Ruins, Ash has traded out his common saber for a unique Double Saber.Saber.
* NewMeat: He's a rookie Hunter who has to be bailed out of his first assignment by his rich uncle.
* RecurringCharacter: Appears in the original PSO quests "Battle Training and "From the Depths". He also makes a cameo in the DLC quest "Soul of Steel".

* TookALevelInBadass: Shows up in a later quest wielding a Double Saber. This is a guy who got beaten by some Goboomas in the Forest.

to:

* TookALevelInBadass: Shows up in a later quest wielding a Double Saber. This is a guy who got beaten by some Goboomas Savage Wolves in the Forest.

* DarkActionGirl: She's [[spoiler:actually an assassin working for the criminal syndicate Black Paper.]]
* TheEndingChangesEverything: [[spoiler:What you learn about Sue in subsequent quests leaves the player with the very strong impression that she was being a ManipulativeBitch in her debut quest, feigning inexperience to trick the player character into allowing her to copy Osto's report]].
* TheFatalist: Unlike other Newmen characters such as Montague and Rupika she is grimly self-aware of the reality that she could die at any time.
* ForWantOfANail: The "Dr. Osto's Research" quest gives the player the option of whether or not to tell Sue their name. This seemingly innocuous choice leads to a multi-quest subplot that can either end with [[spoiler:a climatic showdown with Kireek]] or [[spoiler:the unceremonious death of Bernie]].
* LockedDoor: Like Bernie, she apparently has "the knack" for opening otherwise sealed doors.
* OnlyOneName: Interestingly enough, given that Newmen do apparently have full names just like regular humans. Whether Sue is just an alias or her actual name is never revealed.
* RecurringCharacter: One of the more recurring {{NPC}}s, she appears in the "Dr. Osto's Research", "Waterfall Tears", "Black Paper", and "Unsealed Door" quests.

* NoSell: As an Android, immune to certain status effects.

to:

* MechanicalMuscles: He's a robot but has the sculpted physique of a weightlifter.
* NoSell: As an Android, he's totally immune to certain status effects.

* EvilMentor: [[spoiler: If you do Bernie's subplot, he tries to murder you several times before becoming possessed.]]

to:

* CrutchCharacter / GuestStarPartyMember: In the first quest, "Battle Training", he's level 36 at a point when the player character is probably in the first five or so levels, making him unmistakably this.
* {{DemonicPossession}}: [[spoiler: If you take Bernie's subplot it's heavily implied that the Dark Falz possessed him and tried to make him kill you]].
* TheDreaded: Bernie knows who he is, and upon his reunion with the PC in "Waterfall Tears" he [[spoiler:expresses surprise that you're still alive with Kireek after you]]. Sue also warns the PC to be careful of him if they give her their name in "Dr. Osto's Research".

"From the Depths" quests.
* TheRedBaron: [[spoiler: The Black Hound.]]Hound]].

* SparedByTheAdaptation: The Blue Burst update reveals that he is still alive, meaning his Episode I path is no longer canon.

%%* FutureSpandex

to:

%%* FutureSpandex* FutureSpandex: His standard outfit is a futuristic suit of blue spandex with various gear and body armor worn over it.

to:

* LongRangeFighter: He has the highest ATA among Rangers but the lowest DFP. Accordingly, close range is the ''last'' place a [=RAmar=] player wants to find himself in.
* StatusEffects: His more advanced weapons can inflict them, and in fact the best way to play him online against normal enemies is to spam status effects with your weapons and use basic attacks. You won't be doing much damage this way, but your allies will love how easy things become when enemies can't attack.

* KillItWithFire: Bernie's unique weapon is the Flame Visit, a gun that shoots balls of flame.

to:

* AloofAlly: He'll pop up in a number of quests to help the PC, and while he is friendly and encouraging he keeps his own motives and agenda a secret from the player until the very end.
* DeathByAdaptation: The Blue Burst update reveals that Kireek is still alive, meaning his Episode I path that [[spoiler:tragically ended in his death]] is probably the canon path.
* FailureHero: In the end, all he wanted was [[spoiler:to help his best friend Zoke]], but he just wasn't strong enough.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With [[spoiler:Zoke Miyama, a legendary swordsman so powerful he was monitored by the government]].
* KilledOffForReal: [[spoiler:He tragically dies in Ruins 2 in the "Seek My Master" quest]].
* KillItWithFire: Bernie's unique weapon is the Flame Visit, a gun that shoots balls of flame. He also uses the Foie and Gifoie techniques.

to:

* LockedDoor: Was memetic at one point for his ability to open them. "See? I have the knack."
* MrExposition: He knows more about what's going on than most of the {{NPC}}s you'll meet and will let the player know about classified things like the Gran Squall and Black Paper when he shows up.
* ProperlyParanoid: He's suspicious of the Pioneer 2 government and suspects them of foul play, something he is more correct about than even he knows.
* RecurringCharacter: One of the more recurring {{NPC}}s, he appears in the "Gran Squall", "Waterfall Tears", "Black Paper", "Secret Delivery", "Knowing One's Heart", "Unsealed Door", and "Seek My Master" quests.
* SecretIdentity: In "Black Paper" he reveals that Bernie is not his real name. What exactly his real name is is never revealed.
* UndyingLoyalty: Tells the PC he never betrays those he fights alongside and while he teases them right after about being forgetful, he proves his loyalty to his friends in "Seek My Master".

to:

* TheMedic: Her ATA is the lowest out of all the Rangers but she has higher TP and MST than the [=RAmar=], making her better suited for spellcasting. Sadly, she still can't measure up to any of the Forces.

* TheBigGuy: Notable for having the largest build of any of the character classes. In a party they will always play this role.
* {{Expy}}: Modelled to be this to the Wren androids from the original quadrilogy.
* HealingFactor: Like the other android classes and the [=PSIV=] androids, he regenerates HP with each step he takes. How much health regenerated per step varies by level.

* NoSell: As an android, he's immune to the paralysis, sleep, and poison status effects, and by extension attacks which induce these effects.

* WeaponOfChoice: Usually depicted wielding mechguns.

!!!Tropes that apply to Gilliam
* AscendedExtra: He's a bit-part NPC in Episode I who only appears in the "Addicting Food" quest. In Episode II he reappears but is still a one-shot quest character of little importance. Episode IV elevates him to a larger role as Karen's partner and protector.
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: The Huge Guy to Karen's Tiny Girl.
* HumanityIsInsane: Expresses these sentiments in regards to the Naura sisters, who left Pioneer 2 to set up a cake shop in an area teeming with deadly walking shark monsters. Is he wrong?
* PrivateMilitaryContractors: Used to be a mercenary before joining up with Karen.
* UnknownRival: Hinted at being one to Kireek, but they never meet and Kireek never gives any indication he even knows this guy exists.

to:

'''''Iconic NPC: Elenor'''''Elenor Camuel'''''

%%* GiantWaistRibbon
%%* MiniDressOfPower

to:

%%* GiantWaistRibbon
%%* MiniDressOfPower
* GiantWaistRibbon: Wears a {{Meido}} style dress, complete with metal ribbon and bow around her waist.
* HealingFactor: Like the other android classes and the [=PSIV=] androids, she regenerates HP with each step she takes. How much health regenerated per step varies by level.
* MiniDressOfPower: Has one ''built into her''.
* NoSell: As an android, she's immune to the paralysis, sleep, and poison status effects, and by extension attacks which induce these effects.

* RobotMaid: Her default appearance looks like one, and her in-game counterpart serves this role in story.

* SupportPartyMember: Since her capacity to deal damage is so low, she is best used as a supporting attacker. Trying to play a solo [=RAcaseal=] is a real chore.

!!!Tropes that apply to Elenor
* EarlyBirdCameo: She first appears in the starter-tier quest "Magnitude of Metal" and there's no indication given that she will return or be important later.
* EvilTwin: She has one in the NPC Ult, another [=RAcaseal=] also built by Dr. Montague.
* IJustWantToBeNormal: Her dialogue pretty heavily implies she's not too keen about her present life and would much rather live a normal one.
* MachineEmpathy: Has the ability to communicate with [=MAGs=].
* {{Meido}}: Young, female, frilled hairband and dresses like a maid. Unsurprisingly she's one of the more popular {{Fanservice}} PSO characters, despite being an android.
* RecurringCharacter: She appears in the standard "Magnitude of Metal", "The Fake in Yellow", "Secret Delivery", and "Doc's Secret Plan" quests as well as the DLC-only quest "Soul of Steel".
* RobotMaid: She's Dr. Montague's personal assistant.

%%* RobeAndWizardHat

to:

%%* RobeAndWizardHat
* RobeAndWizardHat: His default character model sports this wardrobe combination.
* TheUnfavorite: A meta example, as he is the only class not to be represented by any NPC character, making it seem like he was just added for the sake of balance.

'''''Iconic NPC: Alicia'''''

to:

'''''Iconic NPC: Alicia'''''Alicia Baz'''''

%%* WhiteMage

to:

%%* WhiteMage
* SupportPartyMember: Her support techniques all have increased range compared to other classes, making her a good support choice for teams on a boss run.

!!!Tropes that apply to Alicia
* AnIcePerson: In battle she uses the Barta and Gibarta techniques.
* ButThouMust: In "Forest of Sorrow" she'll ask the player character about bringing a weak baby Hildebear back to Pioneer 2, but no matter what answer she gets she decides against it, making the player wonder why she even bothered asking at all.
* ButtMonkey: Which is gradually revealed through DLC quests and AllThereIntheManual. She lost both her parents in a war on Coral, then was adopted by [[spoiler:Flowen]] only to lose him, was then taken under the protection of [[spoiler:Flowen's friend Donoph]], only to lose him too, and then teamed up with [[spoiler:Bernie]], '''[[RuleOfThree only to lose him too]]'''. Associating with this lady is basically the kiss of death for PSO {{NPC}}s.
* CharacterDevelopment: She gets some development in Episode II, as it is revealed there that that she is [[spoiler:Heathcliff Flowen's adopted daughter]].
* TheLoad: Not as much of a load as the infamous Nol and Mome, but she's one of the lower leveled NPC allies and keeping her alive can be a chore.
* HeroWithBadPublicity: She has trouble getting other Hunters to accept her quest because of her evasive explanations leading her to be perceived as untrustworthy.
* QuestGiver: She's the client for the "Native Research" and "Forest of Sorrow" quests.
* RecurringCharacter: In addition to the above two quests, she also appears in the DLC-only quest "The Retired Hunter".

'''''Iconic NPC: Dr. Montague'''''

to:

'''''Iconic NPC: Dr. Montague'''''Jean Carlo Montague'''''
* BlackMage: Not that he's any slouch as a WhiteMage either, but his mid and top-tier attack techniques all have increased range and power compared to other classes.

%%* HappyHarlequinHat

to:

%%* HappyHarlequinHat* GlassCannon: Has the highest damage dealing potential of all the Forces but his DFS is almost as low as that of his DistaffCounterpart.
* GogglesDoNothing: His default appearance wears a pair of goggles that have no practical purpose.
* HappyHarlequinHat: Like his DistaffCounterpart he wears one, though in his case it's less of a stereotypical jester hat and more a poofy beanie kind of thing.

to:

* SquishyWizard: Not as squishy as a [=FOnewearl=] but his defense is still horrible and while he can use melee weapons, unless he's very highly leveled trading hits will usually kill him.
* WeAreAsMayflies: According to in-game lore, Newmans have very short lifespans.

* TheAce: When he accompanies the PC in "Soul of Steel" he demonstrates excellent skill as both a BlackMage and WhiteMage.
* TheAtoner: He expresses regret for helping the corrupt Pioneer 2 government in "Soul of Steel" and enigmatically is said to be talking about atonement and vengeance by Elenor at the quest's end.
* CelibateEccentricGenius: He's a brilliant young scientist who never once expresses any kind of interest in romance or sex. His name is almost certainly a pun on that fact.

* WeAreAsMayflies: According to in-game lore, Newmans have very short lifespans.

to:

* WeAreAsMayflies: According NoHeroToHisValet: His military bodyguard has nothing but contempt for him for being a foppish pain the butt.
* QuestGiver: He's the client for the "Doc's Secret Plan" and "Soul of Steel" quests.
* ShoutOut: His name is of course a shout-out
to in-game lore, Newmans have very short lifespans.
the Montague family from Theatre/RomeoAndJuliet.
* VerbalTic: He's a genius, you know, ha ha ha!

%%* HappyHarlequinHat

to:

%%* HappyHarlequinHat* HappyHarlequinHat: Like the [=FOnewm=] she wears one as her default, in her case its the stereotypical jester cap.

* SupportPartyMember: Because of her rock-bottom HP and defense she works best as a team's dedicated mage. Trying to run a solo [=FOnewm=] is a nightmare.

to:

* WeaponOfChoice: Usually depicted wielding a rod.
* WhiteMage: Not that she's any slouch as a BlackMage either, but her Resta has the strongest healing power and her healing techniques all have increased range compared to other classes.

!!!Tropes that apply to Rupika
* AscendedExtra: Like Gilliam, she's a bit-part NPC in Episode I who only appears in one quest (as a stock DamselInDistress no less) and unlike Gilliam, didn't even get to appear in Episode II. Episode IV elevates her to a much larger role, to the point that she basically drives the entire plot of that game.
* IAmNotAGun: Because of her history, most of the people around her see her exclusively as a tool, a fact that she's really not all that happy about.
* SuperSoldier: She is a Newman specially engineered with the ability to control the D-Factor, the nebulous force that is apparently used by Dark Falz and its minions.
* TrackingChip: Has one implanted in her, which is how you are able to find her in Episode I.

!! Mome
A fat scientist [=RAmar=] who tags along in the "Unsealed Door" quest and is by far the most deserving of the {{NPC}}s for TheLoad trope.
* ATeamFiring: He uses a mechgun and his performance with it illustrates nicely why mechguns were originally some of the game's weakest and least-wanted weapons.
* AntiFrustrationFeatures: "Episode I and II Plus" altered the quest slightly so that Mome drops to the ground and plays dead upon reaching De Rol Le, making the quest much less of a hassle.
* EscortMission: Not only do you have to keep Mome alive through the Mines, you have to keep alive fighting ''De Rol Le''.
* TheLoad: He's level 12 but you'd swear he was level 1 by how easily he dies. Even the likes of Nol and Alicia pull their weight more than he does.
* OneShotCharacter: He only appears in "Unsealed Door" but depending on which of the Kireek subplots the player picks they may need to babysit him twice.

to:

* NoNameGiven: They're never given names. In ''VideoGame/PhantasyStarZero'', they are identified only as 'Eldest Sister', 'Middle Sister', and 'Youngest Sister'.
* QuestGiver: In "Pioneer Christmas" they themselves are your clients. The other two Naura quests have clients that are looking for them.
* RecurringCharacter: They appear in the base quest "Addicting Food" and in the DownloadableContent HolidayEpisode quests "Pioneer Halloween" and "Pioneer Christmas".
* ShoutOut: Their existence is a shout-out to the Baya Malay cake shop from ''VideoGame/PhantasyStarI''.

!! Nol Rinale
A Newman journalist who enlists the PlayerCharacter to be her bodyguard. Infamous for a GameBreakingBug that allowed GodModders to permanently rewrite another player's character into Nol.
* ATeamFiring: She uses a handgun but her accuracy with it is crap.
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: In "Journalistic Pursuit". She hires the PC to illegally take her to Ragol but gradually becomes frightened by what she sees there and calls the quest off before even getting past Forest 2.
* CaptainObvious: She goes full Shakespeare on the PC if killed, exclaiming "I'm dead!" as if the player couldn't figure that one out.
* FauxActionGirl: Inverted, as a Newman one would expect her to be combat capable but she's really not.
* TheLoad: She's second only to Mome as burdensome PSO {{NPC}}s go.
* QuestGiver: She's the client for the "Journalistic Pursuit" and "Reach for the Dream" quests.
* PlayerKilling: One of the very first examples, owing to the infamous practice of Nol'ing that ran rampant on Dreamcast-era PSO.
* TrueBlueFemininity: Her wardrobe is exclusively composed of different shades of blue and she's very much a classical female video game character.

In Episode 2, Elly gets a completely unique design since she is now a NPC that doesn't go on missions. At least until her online missions were released and she kept her Episode 2 appearance in the field.

* EscortMission: Ultimately what her missions in both Episodes amount to. Elly is a [=FOnewearl=], which is already a frail class, but doesn't use any techniques which is what the [=Fonewearls=] are known for. Instead she opts to use a measly pistol which does pitiful damage, meaning that you're going to be pulling all the weight. Have fun fighting the [[ThatOneBoss Gol Dragon]] with her.

%%*{Robosexual}: When talking about her new CAL-II she asks the player if they think the design is "sexy". There's also how her interactions in her online quests with [[Calus as he's trying to become human]] could be construed as romantic.
