However, it is arguably part of his disguise, and he is still skilled enough to hide his presence without making it sound.

* SimpleStaff: Only that his ''shakujo'' is not simple: it can extend several meters long, which Dakuan uses to climb trees.

* AmbiguouslyHuman: Are they ''actual'' demons, or humans twisted by their dark arts?

* ExoticWeaponSupremacy: Uses a weird contraption that is kinda like a crossbow if instead of a bolt there was a multipronged claw that fired from a spring and was connected to the bow by a metal chain. While its main purpose seems to be a sudden assassination weapon while striking from the shadows, he doesn't actually have much luck with it; Dakuan is able to dodge it at the last instant and Jubei blocks it. When Shijima tries to pull the chain back to the bow during his fight with Jubei, he winds up impaling himself on Jubei's sword, as it had become entangled in the claw/chain.

* MeaningfulName: "Zakuro" means literally "pomegranate," which might or might not be a multi-language cultural pun. The Spanish and Portuguese word for pomegranate is the homophone of "hand grenade", which would echo her usage of gunpowder and explosive techniques (and not by coincidence, as those were popularized in Japan by Spanish and Portuguese merchants).

* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: He does this to Benisato [[spoiler:and eventually Zakuro, though he doesn't get that far]].

* DepravedBisexual: It's mentioned that Genma sleeps with both Yurimaru and Benisato.

* ItsPersonal: He is out to kill Jubei after the latter intervenes in Tessai's AttemptedRape.

* FatalFlaw: Her smug nature ends up doing her in.

* FatalFlaw: He lacks any methods for close range fighting other than shooting from the shadows. In his last bout with Jubei, he appears to be immobilized inside a portion of shadow because of his claw being entangled. Since he has no other way to attack Jubei or to get around, he's stuck in place until Jubei kills him.

* FatalFlaw: Although his hearing is impressive and has some advantages over regular vision, it is not infallible, and it does not make up completely for functional eyes. When Jubei and circumstances force Mujuro to keep track simultaneously of himself, the many trees of the environment and a thin blade lodged in the more recognizable log of one of those, the last element goes unnoticed for the devil of Kimon and it ends up being his bane.

* FatalFlaw: Submerging him in water makes the hornets inside his body frantic to escape drowning, and they will sting him to death from the inside in an attempt to bore their way out.

* FatalFlaw: Her use of explosives is exploited by Jubei and Dakuan.

* SuperSenses: His senses are keen enough to mostly make up for his lack of vision. Even Jubei's attempt to use the sound of falling trees to disguise an attack is easily foiled by Utsusu's hearing. However, eventually RealityEnsues: his sharpened hearing is not infallible and can miss thin, stationary objects when overtasked. Jubei exploits this weakness and it allows him to kill Utsusu despite Utsusu's superior swordsmanship.

* KnightKnaveAndSquire: Jubei is the knight, being a HitmanWithAHeart who doesn't exploit his customers if they cannot pay him; Dakuan is the knave, for he's sneaky and amoral; and Kagero is the squire, as she's unexperienced and in her very first field mission. You have to wonder if Creator/YoshiakiKawajiri was an early troper given how nicely these PowerTrio tropes fit the characters.

* WeAREStrugglingTogether: Even although we don't get to see all the members interacting together, at least some of them hold murderous grudges toward others, which causes them more than a defeat.

* LightningBruiser: During his final confronation with Jubei, he's able land several devastating blows while shrugging off most attacks.

Their introduction scenes are both in order to save the main lead from a supernatural ninja, both appear and disappear at chance, and both are related to devils either symbolically or literally. Dakuan's hat and kimono are directly based on those worn by Ryo in the 1987 OVA adaptation of ''Yōtōden''.
** He also resembles Giuseppe Mayart from Kawajiri's previous work ''Anime/WickedCity'', being a creepy little old man with an unpleasant personality who manipulates the male and female heroes to have intimate contact with each other. Fittingly, the two characters were voiced by the same actor in the Spanish dubs.
