Series A must watch
Lord and Miller have never let me down before and they are not starting now. This show is creative, clever, visually brilliant, and excellently cast.
Series The Afterparty
The Afterparty is one of the best television shows of the 2020s and is a well-needed directorial comeback for The Lego Movie, 21 Jump Street, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse creator Christopher Miller (his partner in crime Phil Lord has yet to make his comeback as director) and he delivers that comeback like the Kool-Aid man crashing into the window.
Given Lord & Miller's approach of putting in highly detailed work into vague simple ideas that could have failed in the wrong hands, it's to be expected that this show is stylishly directed and smartly written. Working with an original idea for the first time since Clone High, the show also serves as a solid culmination of Miller and Lord's work as creators, and it may well be their best work to date, period. Having the same event told with multiple genres and formats could have been a failure but Miller pulls off his ambitions to create a multi-genre mystery thriller with calculated balance and more. His chess-like direction and his writing team pull the right moves at the right time and right place, and it also allows his cast to truly shine in the way they play those characters.
The result makes the show great to watch both for those who want a good time and for those who need their thinking caps on.
