This is one of those exceptional country singers that is a must-listen. The songs he covers he covers well, the lowest points of his music is actually average at worst, and his style is very different than you'd expect. He combines the sounds of classic country and adds some modern flare to the whole thing. He's also not afraid to venture out into darker themes, something not normal for a country artist.
His best album is Buenos Notches From A Lonely Room. It's 11 tracks of pure country music, with songs that range from uplifting to pure Tear Jerker. From there This Time is also a very decent listen. Although it is a bit softer than his regular music, it still one of his better albums.
A very important note about Yoakam is that listeners should not be diving into it expecting to be amazed on the first listen. It takes getting into his music. It's not designed as background music, with the exception of maybe some of his catchier songs.
All in all Yoakam is a very worthy singer to listen to. For newcomers to country music, it's a very good introduction, but as stated above, give it time.
