But cheated with Bleach and their unholy spawn tried anyway
I really don't mind that the main character is just a 13 year old kid strong enough to cleave a man in half, that's shonen 101, I don't mind that he looks like Gintama's Gintoki mixed with Ichigo. What I mind is when I read something action oriented, I want action, and Gamaran's action is lackluster at best.
The title isn't an exaggeration, for the plot and style is basically a mix between Rurouni Kenshin's and Baki's: Super strong ultra talented hot blooded shonen hero wants to kill his psychopath of a ultra strong uber talented father, and the action is mostly between combatants of ancient japan where mostly the strategy to defeat the enemy will be 'revealing' (aka, asspulling) a new technique out of thin air, or make a variation of this technique, just like Kenshin with his style.
The problem is, it does the same formula badly. Panels are often cluttered with expository dialogue even for the smallest of the action bits. They HAVE to tell the reader EXACTLY what is going on even if the panel illustrates what happened perfectly. To justify the same 'asspulling of techniques' the characters toss some pseudo-babble about martial arts and torque (which most of the time will be ficticious at best) and to make things even worse, they have to also pause the action for flashbacks, such as explaining the story of a minor character that will be dead next chapter and/or whose impact to the story will be minimal, if any.
Every single combat will follow a specific formula: First expository dialogue, then the combat will start, the first guy to strike will be confident (be it the good guys or bad guys), they shall be parried/dodged, go for a 'killing blow' that will also fail, and then more expository dialogue about one of the combatant's 'true' style and their 'true strength', then a bit more of action with expository dialogue to tell what's going on, then the opposite part will do a special technique. Also there is a LOT of praising on how awesome the main character is.
Add to that mess that the story is shallow at best, without breathers between the action, the characters are equally shallow: Gamaran is the hot blooded overconfident talented idiot kid that borders psychopathy, his feudal lord is a genderbent version of 'the chick', and you have something forgettable. At least Rurounin kenshin had the story, characters and overall plot and clashes between ideologies to go with the combat. Instead go re-read that, or go read Vagabond, which has lots of good action scenes without a single word.
Or even better, go check a Kurosawa movie.
