Literature Odd, Esoteric, Worth It.
It's hard to describe this series. It's set in a world that's "moved on"- an advanced society caused a sort of Apocalypse. It reduced it's population to precious few and technology to the iron age, but it did more than that. It broke reality itself. Time and space are no longer constant, and things don't always make sense. The whole series is permeated by a dreamlike atmosphere, with a truly fantastic setting and a plot that's difficult to predict.
The characters are very well done. I'm note big fan of Antiheroes, but I found Roland to be fascinating. Eddie injects a bit of humor and an interesting perspective on the situations. Susannah doesn't come off as the token minority- she fits well and shows as much character depth as anyone else. Callahan only shows up during the last three books, but he's hard not to like.
If you want a series unlike anything you've ever read, I recommend this wholeheartedly. You may not enjoy the last three books, but you might. I liked them just fine. if you want something that will make you wonder and don't mind not understanding everything, this is a series for you.
Literature Nothing Can Compare
What can I say about the Dark Tower? It's a series of unimaginable scope, scale, and creativity. It's fantasy. It's sci-fi. It's a western. It's a romance. It's a tragedy. It's brilliant. The sheer scale of the books alone is astonishing. It's hard to go back to something like Harry Potter after reading about a quest to save all the universe that can or ever will be from complete annihilation. It's a decisive series, however. A definite love it or hate it. But if you love it, you'll love it forever. The books are unforgettable, the symbols and icons will never leave you.
Long days and pleasant nights, Tropers.
