Creep is a movie I've been meaning to watch for a few years, but it always went to the bottom of the barrel despite looking so interesting. Well not anymore, I finally got around to seeing it and...meh.
The first half is very good, it has a very foreboding sense about it and a building dread that you feel about the character of Josef. Aaron is a great stand-in for the everyman who would take an odd job for some free cash and the fact that he's just some guy and not a member of a news team or greater organization that can come to help him adds to the feeling of isolation. The film slowly reveals to the viewer that Josef is not only a creep but also completely batshit crazy and dangerous. It's a fascinating tale.
So Aaron gets home and figures out fairly quickly that he's being stalked and the very first thing I noticed is that he doesn't seem to be taking it very seriously. He's mildly disturbed by the videos and the packages but he seems to be playing Josef's game. Any rational person would've either gotten a gun or skipped town, probably both but not Aaron. He decides to stick it out to the end. One scene I found really amusing is that when Aaron actually does try to get the police involved he says that he A. Has no way to contact Josef B. Doesn't know his address and most damning of all C. Doesn't even know his stalkers real name, first or last. Then he gets mad that the authorities apparently tell him that they can't really do anything to help. It's like, imagine making that phone call and admitting that you went over to some cabin in the woods with no knowledge of who the hell you're "working" with. Whose the real lunatic here? Well, the stalker but you're a few candles shy of a birthday cake too.
Anyway, the film ends with Aaron being killed after agreeing to meet Josef in a secluded place and getting hit in the head with an axe which was funny. Then Josef himself says that he doesn't understand why Aaron took the bait and didn't even check his surroundings. The very last scene is "Josef" making a phone call to another shmuck and revealed that he's done this alot. Which was creepy, it reminded me of Get Out where the family has been abducting people for months at least and no one was able to figure it out.
I give Creep 1 a 6/10, it's a servicable horror film at first but it ceases to be scary once it's made clear how dumb the mark has to be for the plot to work.
Film A mixed bag
