FanficRecs Harry is given a dream of what could be and the future changes.
"Seconded I wasn't expecting much when I read the premise thinking it would be a retelling of canon, but I was very mistaken. At first is seems almost completely the same but soon Harry's maturity causes events to forgo canon and end with something dramatically different. Not Anyone Can Die territory yet, but certainly feels like it's heading that way. Also the expected pairing is done rather well for apparently questionable ages involved in the story."
It's more than just a shipping fic, but that's what it mainly is. The premise starts with Harry's parents giving him a gift of what "may" happen in the future in the form of him living up to the end of his canon sixth year in a dream, but like all dreams they fade away when we wake up. This leaves a Harry who's emotionally grown five years in one night and has some muscle memory of the spells he cast, at the start of his second year. The focus however starts to revolve on Harry's confusion and his remaining infatuation with Ginny and trying to get her to come out of her shell. Worth the attempt even if the premise sounds weird.

Shay Guy: Just wanted to add a caveat to my rec, now that Chamber of Secrets is complete: the quality seems to slack off a bit in that part's denouement, partly due to the increased focus on the pairing, which I found excessive and thus tiresome (note how few times Rowling deemed it necessary to use the words "I love you"), and partly due to some magic-related wonkiness. (Specifically, Ginny having all Riddle's pre-diary memories and being a Parselmouth? Also, the "soul age" concept in itself fits well with the Age Line in canon, but I don't care what pseudonym says, an emotionally traumatized 11-year-old is still 11 years old.)
