ComicStrip It's like Calvin and Hobbes except for girls
And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, because Calvin and Hobbes is pretty great.
That's really all I feel I need to say. You'll probably like this comic just fine.
ComicStrip Anyone who's a fan of both Calvin and Hobbes and Friendship is Magic needs to check this strip out
This is a comic strip that many consider a gender-flipped Calvin and Hobbes, with a unicorn instead of a tiger. There are a few similarities (Marigold has just as dull a view of humanity as Hobbes, and Dana even does the same kind of poetry Sunday strips that Bill Watterson did), but plenty of differences as well.
The obvious one is that everyone else can see Marigold, unlike with Hobbes. But there's a deep, underlying difference as well: the strip is not quite as political as C&H. Phoebe has fairly realistic dialogue for a nine year-old, and you won't see her calling her parents communists for sending her to bed early. If you're expecting the same kind of biting satire as C&H, well, prepare to be disappointed.
And that's where the similarities to My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic comes in. Dana was a fan of FIM, which is why she had a unicorn as a main character. Like FIM, P&HU is focused on being cute. If you like FIM, then I'm guessing you like cute stuff, so you'll probably enjoy this strip just fine.
So, what do I like about this comic? Well, Phoebe is a pretty realistic and relatable child character, and, like with Calvin, a lot of her humor comes from how relatable her situations are, and her childish view of the world. (One great strip has her sending Marigold a text to bring her some mittens, but Phoebe's autocorrect changes "mittens" to "mountains", and Mari does just that.)
Marigold is hilariously narcissistic as well. Plus, her running gag of replying "Unicorn" whenever Phoebe asks her how she did something sounds like it has potential to become a meme.
Overall, while this strip is nowhere near as great as Calvin and Hobbes, for what it's trying to be, it does a good job at it. Not all jokes get a laugh out of me, but a lot do. I think anyone who's a fan of C&H and MLP: FIM will enjoy this strip a bunch.
