This is a good review for anyone who might be a little worried about their love for this show. I can say that about a year ago, I would also call someone crazy if they said I would end up liking my little pony, but here I am, watching the show, reading some of the fanfics, and commenting on reviews such as this one. And your right, you can end up comparing one of the characters to someone you know, or even yourself.
P.S, I am not bashing anyone when I ask this, but what is up with this site's HUGE love for firefly? Don't get me wrong, I like the show as well, and it didn't deserve to get cancelled, but I want to know what all hype about it is. I know it's made by the same guy who made buffy the vampire slayer{the origins of this website in a way}, and I do like his works, but I just don't see quite what all the gushing is about.Again, I am not hating on anyone when I ask this, I am just curious, that's all.
It's only a small leap from "teenage boy watching children's cartoon show" to "teenage boy watching children's cartoon show directed at girls".

Psh, though it says the show "is not for you if you care what people think about you", I think my friends actually think WORSE of me if I decide not to watch this show. All of my friends adore the show, and even my 20-year-old older brother does. Plus, following well-hyped series usually works out well for me (Hetalia, Homestuck, both series well-hyped and that I love). So I do believe I'll give this show a try.
I'm in much the same situation as you. It took 3 things to make me start watching the show: the Starscream vs Rainbow Dash Death Battle, and the fanmade Rainbow Factory song, and the support of an online friend of mine who is also a fan. It's still not a show I'd watch in broad daylight with people around, though. I'm not ready.

Not for the faint of heart.
A month ago, August 18th, I would have thought you crazy for even suggesting I could name a character from this show. Now I am addicted. I wouldn't go so far as to say that it's my favorite show on television, I love Firefly and Doctor Who too much for that, but It's definitely the best animated show I've seen since Fosters Home, which seems simple enough considering they shared the talents of Lauren Faust. There are enough characters in this show to connect with anyone. (I personally am Rainbow Dash), and music and cuteness for even the most slobful teenage boy to adore. This show is not for you if you care what people think about you, especially if you are an aforementioned teenage boy, so if you can't handle it, that's cool to. It's a legitimate storyline, with just enough discontinuity that you won't take it too seriously.
