A Mixed Bag

As a long-time fan of the Sonic the Hedgehog games, I was looking forward to seeing this series since it was announced. Having seen all eight of its episodes, I must say I'm mixed on it. Maybe it's just my personal preferences, but I've always preferred the lighter, more comedy-based Sonic cartoons (Adventures and Boom) over the darker, more action-based Sonic cartoons (SatAM, Underground, X, and Prime).

I will admit I do like Prime's concept; Sonic visiting different dimensions where he meets different versions of his friends. Thus far, we've seen a dystopian city ruled by Dr. Eggman's relatives, a jungle, and a pirate ship on the open seas. I also liked the references to the games (namely the password to Tails' workshop being 1992 and Big being referred to as "Citizen 1998", both references to the release dates of their debut games).

Unfortunately, my main issue with Prime is its dramatic tone, particularly in episodes where Sonic visits New Yoke City. I get that the show was going for more of a SatAM vibe, since that was the first Sonic cartoon to get renewed for a second season, but Underground tried it, and it didn't work, and I don't feel it works in Prime, either.

My other issue is that the ending to the Season 1 finale, "There's No Arrgh! in 'Team'" left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth, namely where Sonic meets up with Shadow in the limbo dimension, where Shadow informs Sonic that thanks to him, his world is in ruins, setting up a cliffhanger for the next season. To my knowledge, every Sonic cartoon up to Prime has been cancelled before ending on a proper resolution. While a few, such as SatAM, X, and Boom did get renewed for a second season, even those shows teased new seasons that never came to be, due to circumstances beyond their control. As much as I want to be optimistic for Sonic Prime getting a second season, considering that Netflix, once the #1 video streaming service is now facing stiff competition from other leading services such as Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, and Paramount+, I feel that Sonic Prime is going to end up being yet another victim of the Sonic cartoons' curse. Sorry, Sonic Prime.
