The Worst of the Prequels

"This is like watching C-SPAN with monster masks" -Matt Oswalt

While there has been much (mostly deserved) vitriol directed towards The Phantom Menace, I found that film much less of a chore to sit through than this one; as annoying as Jar Jar was in the first film, it has nothing on Hayden Christiansen's wooden acting and the Padme/Anakin romance which was both painful to sit through, had several redundant scenes, and primarily served to break up the more interesting plot thread (Obi-Wan's investigation of the assassination, and how it uncovers the clone army). It would have been more interesting to have Anakin and Obi-Wan carry out the investigation together, while protecting Padme at the same time; this would have both shown their camaraderie, making Anakin's betrayal in Revenge of the Sith all the more shocking and heartbreaking for Obi-Wan, while simultaneously making the Anakin/Padme romance feel more organic and natural.

Another missed opportunity is in the Senate scenes; they could have been used to show Palpatine's manipulative nature, with him precipitating the separatist crisis by making some seemingly innocuous comments that end up setting various worlds against each other while making him not seem responsible for doing so, but instead they just slow down an already dialogue-heavy movie.

Perhaps the film's greatest strength is its visuals; a variety of different worlds and settings are depicted, from Coruscant to Kamino to Naboo to Geonosis, and the film succeeds in making them all look truly unique (and making different locations on those planets distinct, such as the Jedi temple versus the greasy spoon diner on Coruscant; one location that stood out for me was the bar that Kenobi and Anakin follow the assassin to, which looks like a more urban-style version of the cantina from A New Hope), and many of the set-piece scenes such as the fight in the droid factory, the clone creation center, and the battle of Geonosis, are appropriately spectacular.

I agree with this, especially the part about this film being worse than its predecessor. From a writing perspective, the only good things about Clones are Obi-Wan\'s investigation and the death sticks scene. Everything else is just really, really bad. The visuals may be good, but they mean nothing without good writing. And the lightsaber duels in this movie are probably the worst in the whole saga.

What the movie also did was tend to fall back on fanservice. So they stick in a jedi vs not!Boba Fett fight, and a Jedi army battle. The fans were impressed by that stuff enough to overshadow a lot of the more glaring flaws of the movie.

Book me today! I also review weddings, funerals and bar mitzvahs.
