I might be shooting myself in the foot, but I like this comic.

"Better Days" is a comic by Jay Naylor and it is popular in both a good and bad way. As another critic pointed out, this comic is considered to be Naylor's "flawed magnum opus" and I can see why because Naylor doesn't hold back on his politics, and the way he portrays blacks in Jews is pretty offensive, and the relation ship between Fisk and his sister Lucy is... shocking.

But looking past the flaws and controversies and other questionable things, it is a fairly well written story of a cat character, Fisk Black who grows from a boy to a man. People like to poke fun at Naylor as they think Fisk is a "Mary Sue" because in the comic's sequel, "Original Life" portrays Fisk as perfect, but in Better Days, Fisk's life really sucks. His father is dead, his mother is kind of a loose goose, his teachers are giving him crap and Fisk barely has any friends. I think the comic's story was to give the main character trials to overcome so he would become a well functional and successful adult. I think that's the gist of all our childhoods, so we can overcome the obstacles of our personal crisis and then grow up to be better people. I have a feeling that Better days was meant to be really deep this whole time, and Jay Naylor is probably a genius.

The artwork is really stunning and beautiful and overtime Naylor has improved to make it even better. Naylor's artistic skills are graphic novel/manga levels of greatness. I mean sure both his comics are in black & white but that doesn't hurt the comic.

So in conclusion, I like "Better Days" despite it's controversies. I kind of wish Naylor would even make this into a book (editing out the "questionable" parts as I mentioned above, of course) Because honestly I would consider purchasing a copy.

It's not a perfect comic but it deserves my respect and a 4 out of 5 star rating.

...Plus I would rather read Better Days than those god awful Cycle of Luv or Sonichu webcomics.

The thing is that Fisk doesn\'t really strugle much in life. Bad things happen to people close to him and he\'s relegated to the savior/fixer/adviser role. He has a really active sex live, starting at a very young age and going through multiple girls including his sister; His mother is assaulted and he beats the guy up; his sister gets hospitalized and he suddenly matures beyong his years; his war buddy is the one who\'s in a wheelchair and contemplating suicide; his cousin is the victim of sex slavement while he rescures her and kills everybody in a matter that would turn on Steven Seagal. That is why the other characters (Lucy, their mother and Beth) are more well received.

What if Jay Naylor did compile all the comics and published them into a book? Like would anyone even buy a copy?
