Incredibly great in concept, sometimes lacking in execution.

Let me start by saying, I think this show has incredibly high highs and incredibly low lows. The decision to forgo filler is a bit of a double edged sword as well. Yes, the original show had a bit too much of it but this show needed a bit of breathing room. If you're going to not have filler, don't devote a lot of time to a dumb love triangle. However, they did learn from their mistakes and got better about managing time as the series wore on. I'm also of the opinion that production issues outside of Bryke's control dogged the show and they were sometimes fighting uphill. S3, which is the one they got to do their own thing, stands out as being amazing and I don't believe that's a coincidence.

S1 starts off well, drags in the middle, and then picks itself back up towards the end. It's plagued by that damn love triangle. I don't know why they focused on it so much in what was supposed to be miniseries. Still baffling to me. The first half of s2, quite frankly, sucks. However its production was so rushed that it being that way was probably inevitable. I could gush about "Beginnings" all day but I won't bore you with the details of that gushing. It's amazing. The second half of s2 is perfectly fine. I don't love it but I don't hate it either. Man, S3 is quite something though. Just a thrill ride from beginning to end. I remember gasping the first time when I saw Zaheer kill the Earth Queen and the climax episodes are among the best in the entire franchise. This is actually my favorite season in the franchise. s4 is really great as well but I think suffers from having an episode cut out of the budget. That probably would have gone to giving Kuvira a focus episode. Once again, not going to fault Bryke for this.

Korra is a better character than Aang but Aang's friends are better characters than Korra's. I love political villains and love all the villains here. Much better than one dimension Ozai.

TLDR: This show had huge ambitions and is amazing in concept but is dragged down by its sometimes not so great execution. A lot of this can be chalked up to issues with Nick and I think the show's quality is admirable given those issues. I'll give this an 8.5/10
