Unique and Horrifying, but Could Be More (MILD SPOILERS)

So, in an era when everyone is bitching and moaning about the prevalence of superhero movies, the decision to make a superhero-based horror movie seems like an odd choice — while a unique idea, it also seems like just a marketing gimmick to sell more tickets. How did it fare?

Well, to be honest, the superhero elements are fairly downplayed. Aside from the basic elements from Superman's backstory and powers, the film is predominantly horror-based. While it has never been done before in film, it has been done in other media before — hell, we have a whole trope based on it!

That said, it is a very effective horror movie, perhaps the scariest I've seen in years. The jump scares didn't really work on me (but that's mostly because I've been desensitized to them), but the blood, gore, creative deaths, and the psychological aspects all make for one terrifying film, and the fact that the parents genuinely love their alien hellspawn child provides real emotional pathos that makes the murder scenes that much more powerful and effective — all aided by top-notch music, sets, and special effects.

Overall, it gets a 7/10. Absolutely terrifying, but could've done more with the "inverted superhero" concept.
