Final Fantasy VII: Overall, a good game if somewhat flawed.

I'll try to keep this review simple and to the point.

Final Fantasy VII is the seventh title in the long-running series. Final Fantasy VII is the game that everybody and their mother pretty much knows about. It's been referenced to, parodied, mocked, copied and everything else you can think of. I played this game a while back and finished it some time ago. I bought this game off of the PSN along with Silent Hill. When I finished it, I was able to form my opinion on it. While I don't think that FFVII is the greatest game of all time like some people do, I think that it's a good game and I would recommend it to people looking for a good JRPG.

First off, I personally liked the story. While it initially starts off as a tale about trying to take down a evil ,corrupt corporate empire hurting the earth with a group of Ragtag misfits, it later turns into a story about trying to stop an evil madman from destroying the world. What I liked about the story is that it was pretty well told in spite of the grammatical errors that could occasionally come up. The story had some pretty good moments that I liked, especially the one scene that everybody already knows about(Aeris Dies). I also like the fact that even though the game was serious most of the time, it had its goofy and lighthearted moments. This prevented the game from getting too dark, which was good to me. Overall, the story was pretty good.

I also found the combat to be decent as well. The combat is the Active Time Battle system that Final Fantasy is known for. What I liked about the system is how fast paced it is. It makes combat a lot more fun and forces the player to think tactically. I also liked the special moves that characters could do(The limits). It was always great to use a limit to finish off a boss. The summons were good as well, although some were more useful than others. Overall, the combat was pretty good.

Last but not least, the characters were likable and quite good. While there were some characters I liked more than others, I found the cast to be good and I liked seeing where their character arcs would go. Cloud, for example, seems like your typical Badass mercenary type character. However, as the game goes on, it's shown that Cloud isn't what he or the player thinks he is. Tifa, for another example, seems like the typical childhood friend you would see in other JRP Gs. However, as the game goes on, we see the truth of the relationship between her and Cloud and how it evolves. We also get to see the hidden depths of the other characters as well. This, to me, shows how well-written the characters are and how they had more depths than other characters in the genre. I really enjoyed watching these characters develop and I enjoyed watching their reactions to the events around them. Overall, I really like the cast.

Despite the annoying encounter rate, dated graphics, tough bosses, and frustrating ways you can get lost. I liked this game. Try it out.
