I'm not usually a realistic fiction fan, especially if the series was written during a particularly sexist time period. However, Lucy Maud Montgomery's narration and writing style along with the feminist ideals (well, some of them- not all of the ideas were feminist and some of them were overtly Christian) were great.
Even if the series is pretty religious, there's an atheist character who isn't treated as antagonistically as one might expect. The leads are female, and again, the narration is hilarious.
The romance, too, was realistic and so, so much better than some of the YA novels now. I admit that this series has its issues but it's pretty awesome overall.
Underrated
