A Perfect Return to Sly Cooper...Mostly.

First of all, I have to give serious props to Sanzaru Games for absolutely NAILING the Sly Cooper formula. I never would have guessed this was made by a different developer if I didn't happen look it up. The gameplay is nearly identical to all the previous installments, with the addition of the playable Cooper ancestors. The series' quirky humor is present as well, along with the usual rogues gallery of villains. All in stunning HD.

So gameplay-wise, it's pretty much perfect. Story-wise...it has some issues.

The basic plot is fine. Pages are mysteriously disappearing from the Theivious Raccoonus, and the gang travels back to various time periods to help the Cooper ancestors and stop those responsible. It's a creative premise, and there's a lot of fun stuff they do with it.

What I have a problem with is the portrayal of certain returning characters. Carmelita's sex-appeal redesign for one, and her new role as the bitchy ex-girlfriend instead of the Sympathetic Inspector Antagonist from the previous games. At least she's finally Latina again.

More blatantly (and this is a MAJOR SPOILER so be warned), is Penelope's Face-Heel Turn. I actually don't have as big of a problem with this as most people. I think it's a cool twist in itself, I like the Bentley Character Development that comes as a result of it, and it leads to one of the coolest boss fights in the series. But her motives are shaky at best, and the whole thing comes across as a complete Ass Pull that could have been executed WAY better.

I should also make note of the ending. Without spoiling anything outright, it's a very unique ending for a Sly game, and I'm interested to seeing what comes of it...if they ever make another one. Things are looking rather grim in that regard. -_-

Overall, it's a very good Sly Cooper GAME, but the story and characters might piss you off a little if you're a hardcore fan. I give it an 8/10.
