I think a youtube comment that I found in one of the OS Ts said it best "Clannad is not a sad anime, per se. There is no anime out there that will make you cry more than this one, but in the end, this anime is so happy. It's the beautiful story of two people and their life together, and even though things are hard at times, it doesn't mean the whole story is sad. It is mainly about the joys in life, despite the sad times."

Clannad: Another example of why KEY does so well
Clannad is one of those series that makes you cry. Its pretty much KEY's agenda since Kanon is to make the audience cry. And I sure as hell love it. Each "arc" is nicely fleshed out, focusing on one girl per arc. With KEY's patented "Make 'em laugh, then make 'em cry like hell", Clannad is a beautiful story about the joys of having a family and what it really means to care about someone. I would like to make a point about series that fall into the Romance Drama doesn't float my boat usually. In fact, I normally rip on the Romance genre whenever the topic comes up. But with Clannad, I was enamored, crying my eyes out numerous times throughout the entire series.
I love how everyone comes from such different backgrounds and pasts to form such beautiful relationships and at the end of the day, create such a beautiful "family" it makes me cry. Clannad is indisputably one of my all time favorite anime ever. I personally don't have anything negative to say about Clannad. The only thing I can think of that might not fly with other people is that Clannad may come off as cheesy and unrealistic, though thats definitely not my opinion on this fantastic series
