This page has gotten too long, and the end of the "Power Five" means that it probably needed to be overhauled anyways.

I still think the best option is to rename the page "American Football Power Conferences" (we can move the "Pac-2" to the general Collegiate American Football Conferences page), then split off to SEC Football and Big Ten Football as necessary. Not sure how to go about a rename of this page, though, or if it would be best to just make a brand new page. Would love to hear others' thoughts on this.

So it doesn't seem like there is an urgent need to split this page, but I do wonder if it needs to be renamed to something like "American Football Power Conferences" this offseason. Calling the 2-Pac a "Power" conference is inaccurate, but don't want to jump the gun with a new name without consensus.

The database update has seemingly reduced the optimal page length, so want to start the discussion on how to break the football pages down.

I wanted to start with this page because it's going to need to be overhauled in a month anyways. I'm not sure why this page was renamed last month (without consulting anyone) when we already knew that there will only be four "power" conferences next year. I think the best solution is probably to give each conference its own page ("Southeastern Conference Football", "Big Ten Football", etc). That will ensure that we won't need to start new pages if the category nomenclature changes- I think it's very likely only the SEC and B 1 G will be considered "Power" conferences in a few years. Alternatively, we could have a "Power Football Conferences" page with spinoffs just for the SEC and B 1 G.

I think we should just keep the page as is until the national champ is decided in a few weeks, but would love to hear from my fellow football tropers in the meantime.

Agreed, I do think the general college conferences collection of pages should be overhauled by when all the realignments happen in August. If I had to give one saying thing, I'd say that each conference should have its own page for the nomenclature reasons you just described. I guess it should probably be the ten FBS conferences (with the exception of the Pac-12, which would be lumped in with the MW), but I realize that might cause a bit of bloat. The one problem with it I can see is that it'd need to be changed again if (or IMO when) the Big Ten and the SEC merge into one Minor League NFL superconference.

Also, I'm starting to wonder if these pages should be on football specifically, or if it should also include the non-football conferences (with the biggest example I can think of is the current Big East with schools like Xavier and Villanova).

A lot of good points here.

First, the pages were originally just about football, and I think had "Collegiate Football" in their title to reflect that until a month ago. I think that should be restored in the realignment reshuffle to reflect the content of these pages; we can have a separate page(s) for the NCAA conferences that covers other sports, but football really operates in its own realm.

At the same time, idk if C-USA or the MAC need their own pages. Maybe we have an "FBS Football Conferences" page that links to individual pages for the "Power" conferences and contains the descriptions for the remaining five? I don't think they're going to throw out the FBS name soon... unless, as you point out, major college football leaves the NCAA behind. Hard to predict.

Looks like the site has reverted to the old page length standard, not getting the alert anymore. Glad we weren't too hasty. We'll return to this if the issue returns.
