Unfortunate Implications? To wit: A woman must shed her glasses (a symbol of her intelligence) because female intelligence isn't widely considered sexy. Yeah, it's old and retrograde, but I think it's there. For evidence, I submit Dorothy Parker's quotation: "Men seldom make passes at girls who wear glasses."
More film examples: the bookstore lady in The Big Sleep - Bogie tells her to take her cheaters off before he'll have anything to do with her. That whole scene is pretty amusing, actually - Bogie basically wanders in for questions and sex as a way to pass the time during a thunderstorm.
