When a story is set in England (usually London) during the 1890's (such as for example many of the Sherlock Holmes stories), how much does this overlap with the Victorian era? How can we distinguish between "the gay nineties" (as a period set) and the Victorian era (likewise as perceived in popular culture)?
It took like 3 quarters of a Century for the 50s to replace The Gay '90s yet it's now taken only 2 decades for the 80s to replace the 50s. Shows how things move faster as time progresses.
