I think this trope should be renamed "Future Classics Radio" or something like that. A station that plays only current hits is nothing unusual; it's called Top 40. This trope is more about only playing songs people will remember ten, twenty, thirty years down the line, and usually only ones they'll remember fondly.
In Life on M Ars (series 1), one episode finishes off with If by Roger Whittaker, along with footage from the BBC series he had - Gene and Sam had been discussing musical preferences after Sam had advised Marc Bolan to be cautious when driving...
