CD caddies are the same, but different. I think they look very cool though.
Lampshaded in the "Chuck" episode "Chuck Versus The First Fight" with an old computer that only takes triangular disks.
Guys, the patlabor example, obviously nobody from oriental or old enough? Those are MO Discs (Magneto-optical) instead of floppies(the digital comment is right, but still failed to correctly identify them) Sony called it MD(mini disc) for their music players. MO Discs are quite common back then in Japan since it is introduced in 1985.
Also, the HK Judiciary and Legco still use Floppy discs till this very day, and showed no signs of changing.
Edited by 210.184.37.185... Tbe disks were used as an empty gambling chip in "the negotiator" and were never actually suggested to contain the information (at least, to the viewer) so I don't think this example is fair here.
I must humbly beg to differ with the article: I was still using floppies in both hacking /and/ cracking contexts until about 2006 (I should add that, while still a hacker, I'm now a /reformed/ cracker. Well, semi-reformed, anyway. Also I never did anything illegal, just youthful japes and hijinks). Some people just really are dumb enough to secure the CD drive but not the floppy drive. (Although, this was a school IT system, and everyone knows school IT departments aren't exactly a magnet for top talent)
So in summary, the ubiquitous 1.44MB magnetic medium isn't dead yet. (Or rather, it wasn't dead yet four years ago. Probably is now)
Edited by 87.243.208.102Hay, what happened to the "Microsoft Internet on a Disk" picture? That was pretty funny! I have no idea what the current one is! Clicking on it and skimming the resultant article tells me that Vohaul is some bad guy from Space Quest, I guess, so that's pretty funny too, some dude's whole mind fitting on a tiny floppy. Still, who took out the Internet On A Disk? :(
Is it just me, or is this already super out of date with references to mp3 players and CD-RO Ms? :( I don't think most teenagers would even call it that, they would just call it a CD, but also not really understand the point of buying individual albums by an artist when you could just stream it on Spotify or something.
