I have an irritating quasi-memory of reading of some dynasty in which each monarch had two names and a number for each, like "Karl VI Ludwig IX"; but haven't come across evidence of it in recent years. Did I dream it?

Definitely. The current one seems like all examples will be "very old kingdom, 500th king" yet the first example only goes up to 12 (France went to 18 after several non-monarchy periods).
