Um... Calling the Old Man Out comes to mind... There may be others.
Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving. -Terry PratchettWould the "Triple Takeover" episode from "Transformers Generation 1" be this trope, or "This is Something He's Got to Do Himself" or something else?
After the Triple Changers Blitzwing and Astrotrain mutiny and trap Megatron and Starscream, they try to assert their claim to lead the Decepticons after one too many failures (they feel) by Megatron.
Part of Optimus Prime's Batman Gambit is to get Megatron worked up enough to reassert and prove his claim of being Decepticon Leader. This causes Megatron to engage Starscream, Devastator as well as both Triple Changers in a battle royale (which forces Prime to keep an itchy-trigger-fingered Ironhide as well as the other Autobots from joining).
Megatron wins, while a stunned Ironhide admits, "I guess Prime was right. Megatron took care of the Decepticons for us."
Is there a trope for when this backfires causing a rift between the speaker and the person he's talking to or the hero watches someone die.
