This trope seems to be about people not having crazy reactions more than them knowing tropes from the genre. No reasonable person would assume any of the first three explanations given in the first example or allow supernatural explanations for things unless they had encountered the supernatural before whether their in a science fiction work or not. The only time they ignore mundane explanations is when they're still shaken up by learning of the science fiction element that was just introduced to their world. In almost all cases of detectives dismissing suicide or accidental death they find strong evidence or proof that that it wasn't so they have no reason to continue with the idea. The only reasonable explanations for everyone disappearing in Left Behind are aliens took people and divine action.
