Couldn't the puzzle be easily solved in five steps?
1. Take the grain across. 2. Take the boat back empty. 3. Take the fox across. 4. Take the boat back empty. 5. Take the chicken across.

When I first heard the puzzle as a kid, I suggested the following solution: first the farmer takes the goat and cabbage at once, and while he's busy rowing, the goat will eat the cabbage; then he returns for the wolf and throws it out of the boat in the middle of the river.

What if you've got a vegetarian fox? Or a chicken on steroids with a very sharp beak? And on a bridge... there's only one direction to go in and a parapet to either side, so you don't need a bloody torch. Just keep moving in the only direction you can possibly go in. If it's wide, keep a parapet where you can feel it. Problem solved.
