there seems to be a bit of a difference here wit' the recipient and focus of the wham. For instance, "Luke I am your father" is a Wham Line because we didn't know it beforehand. On the other hand, we also knew that Ratatouille was about a rat chef so that certainly wasn't.

It's not great but it's something.

Right. Dropping the Bombshell is In-Universe and thus objective — if the acting and writing are at all competent, you should be able to tell when a character notices the bombshell is dropped. Wham Line is meta and applies to viewers, which is why there is a disclaimer on the example line.

Wham Line might be a YMMV trope, depending. Dropping the Bombshell is not.

I wouldn't say Wham Line is subjective: it's about altering the storyline, providing a twist and various objective pot based things.

It's just that Dropping the Bombshell allows for other things. For instance the rather strong character bombshell in the Deus Ex example.

Top
