They're "civilized" because they share most of the traits that allow humans to build civilization, yet are still very much animals.

Ah, so they live in an "animal civilization", distinct from a "human civilization". Got it. Still think the name is sort of ambiguous.

^^ Usually when people discuss fiction, the term "civilized animals" is used to mean characters like Mickey Mouse. We should rename this page, and rename Funny Animal to Civilized Animal, so it matches how people typically use the term.

Isn't this trope somewhat misnamed? "Civilized" suggests a higher level of anthropomorphism to me then the animal type described possesses.
