I'd say that counts. The point is that he feels responsible for the death - whether he is or not is less important.

Would a character count as this if he wasn't guilty over killing someone himself, but feels that he failed to prevent someone being killed? Detective Butch O'Neal of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series became a cop to atone for not stopping his older sister from getting into the car with some boys who raped her and beat her to death.
