Will someone compare and contrast Apron Matron with a Yamato Nadeshiko? I think that would be interesting.
Hide / Show RepliesYamato Nadeshiko is a complicated Japanese cultural concept, kind of an ideal woman in the Confucian worldview.
Not sure how to summarize Apron Matron, though.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanBoth are devoted to the family and know how to put their foot down, to me, in a way it seems how they put it down is what can define them as one or the other.
The Apron Matron seems to be a little less passive - bending a mischievous or outright naughty child over the knee is not beyond them - but that doesn't mean that they're not passive at all, while the Yamato Nadeshiko is a bit more reserved. A bit of an obvious matriarchal leader versus the-woman-behind-the-man.
Both are equally happy to return harm done to their loved ones, but in different ways.
Kind of makes me think of the stereotypes of classic American gangsters versus the old Yakuza: they're both about business and respect, but the former might not have a problem with a classic surprise visit that ends with a Tommy gun turning an entire room to Swiss cheese, while the latter will have a single man waiting in your bedroom that uses no more than two bullets.
I think I took a tangent too far, but I feel comfortable that the example is accurate.
In short, the Apron Matron can be direct or indirect with her responses to familial injury, such as either spanking her child's bully outright or making a single phone call to the other child's mom, while the Yamato Nadeshiko will most likely be indirect, such as just the phone call. The Apron Matron may also be obvious head of the family, while the Yamato Nadeshiko will always be behind her husband, be it as supporter or manipulator.
That's how I've come to understand the two, at least.
Just someone with an obsession to create profiles. Nothing more, nothing dangerous.I understand the title sort of rhymes, but would it be up for consideration to change the trope name to "Iron Matron" for pun? The Apron Matron is usually quite rigid with her ways, and it's a pun on Iron Maiden (when she is most certainly no longer a maiden, or at least not portrayed as one; the "not a maiden" also being part of the joke).

Hide / Show RepliesThe Image Pickin' forum is the place to go for these sorts of changes, you get a more diverse opinion and more alternatives. Personally, I agree with you.
Link added. That is Nora Batty from Last Of The Summer Wine. Famous for seeing off her lecherous next door neighbor with a broomstick. For a typical example see here
