I took a look at a receipt from Grocery store — after a regular visit there was exactly ten different items with .99 on them, so 10 cents less than if it had been full euros with the .99s.

Okay, so this might not be strictly relevant. But it amused me.
As of the 13th of July, 2012, ...And 99ยข has 99 inbounds◊.
That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.
"The trope has become so prevalent and ingrained that people automatically round prices up in their heads... even if it is a flat price. For instance, a person seeing $29.99, will immediately think "30 bucks", but if it's priced $29 flat, they may still round it up and think "30 bucks"." — actually, that isn't true. This is one of those things that works, even if you're aware of it and deliberately guarding against it. It's just the way our brains are wired.
