I don't really see the point of the "don't call the police on your child if they steal" example in the Real Life section. Yes, children should be taught that police are there to help them, but also that they will arrest them if they do something bad. If they steal something, which is a crime, then of course the police should be called on them.

The point is they may be punished to a degree their parents don't want.

So parents don't want their kids to face legal consequences for their crimes? Don't they realize that even if they are family, they must still face the legal consequences of their crimes like anyone else? The example says the kid being jailed is a backfire, but isn't that exactly what should happen to those who steal? And besides, isn't failing to report a crime you know about to the police a crime in itself? (Sorry for the late reply, btw.)

No, in some cases this is not their wish. The point here is usually they want the police to give the kids a stern talk or something, not arrest them. As sentences and jail are frequently harsh, it is easy to understand why they might not want the result. Police also say this lends a negative reputation, if they are used often as a threat. It builds up a lack of trust, and they dislike this. As for not reporting a crime, the laws vary. Some are mandated to, like teachers or medical personnel, but the rest often have no legal obligation.

"Let the punishment fit the crime" is linked to The Ramones, but I more associate that line with Gilbert & Sullivan's The Mikado - much more likely to be the phrase's origin. Should the link be changed?

What about Neopet? It is famous for that anything you do against its rules will cause your account to be FROZEN. A swear word in the discussion board (even if its just a typo) or using a minor account (not main account in the same email address) for playing a minigame or spinning a wheel. Theoretically (though never enforceable, thankfully), seeking anyone else for help in playing a minigame, including your mother, brother or classmate, will also cause your account to be frozen.
