Going to rewrite the part that says that Bavaria isn't a regular state in Germany. This is plain wrong, since "Free State" is just a part of the official name of Bavaria (Free State Bavaria) and it doesn't grant Bavaria any additional rights and duties compared to other German state. Historically "Free State" just says that the state is a republic and not ruled by a monarch, making this affix actually superfluous. The affix "Free State" is also carried by the states of Saxony and Thuringia.
Some Bavarians, especially those from the southern parts of Bavaria actually DO consider themselves as Bavarians rather than Germans.
