Pulled this horrific natter text:

  • Asskicking Equals Authority: How else would you possibly elect a leader of the jianghu besides a martial arts tournament? And for that matter, Guo Jing's command of the military forces stationed at Xiang Yang seems to be based entirely on his overwhelming fighting prowess, since he wasn't part of the Song army in any way or really anything except some vagrant when he showed up there.
    • Actually if Guo Jing had no kung-fu skills he would still be a prime candidate to lead the city garrison, you need to read Legend of the Condor Heroes, in his youth before he even started his training in kung fu he trained as a Mongol warrior becoming skilled with the bow and as a youth loosed the arrow that killed Temujin's rival for the khanship, during his period of knight errantry he would later come into possesion of a lost manual in warfare, and when Temujin raised his armies against the Khitans he returned to the Khan's side to serve as commander of the Mongol vanguard, admittedly he got this position out of nepotism-being the betrothed of the Mongol princess, and the oath brother of the Mongol prince. When Temujin turned his sights on the walled cities of the silk route, Guo Jing was instrumental in their taking as the Mongols had no skills in siege warfare, and it took Guo Jing's ability to get over the walls and open the gates for the Mongol armies. It was only when Temujin gave Guo Jing sealed orders to invade Sung territory that he broke with the Mongols. It is strongly hinted that in the years that Guo Jing held Xiang Yang that the Mongols chose not to attack out of respect for their former general, that he could have been the only defender of the city and they still would not have attacked. It was only with death of his oath brother and the change in the Mongol leadership that the Mongol's resumed their plans for the conquest of Sung China.
