Abusive father ? Im thinking this is a mistake and the issue is more the father has died and theyre still having a hard time with it. They have too many pictures of him around the house for him to have been a traumatizing presence.

Agreed. One of the pictures shows a much younger Jay alongside her father, who appears exactly the same age as It does when It attacks at the pool. To me, this says dad is dead. Furthermore, her mom's day drinking makes more sense in the context of the father being dead than if he was simply absent.
